Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the rear threshold, trays, and interior paneling to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11140265 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins plug-in simple vehicle wiring harness with the 4-pole flat trailer connector. This product fits certain years and models of the Mazda5 and CX9. You can use the vehicle fit guide located at etrailer.com, to ensure that this is a fit for you vehicle. It's going to provide a four way flat connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights. This is compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole and 7-pole adapters. Adapters are sold separately and it's going to come with a dust cap for the four way flat connector, that way you can cut off the connection points when your plug is not being used. The black box right here is the included tail light converter. This is going to ensure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer's.

This is a power module that connects directly to the vehicle battery, to avoid overloading the vehicle's electrical system. This unit is designed to connect quickly and easily. You just locate the connection points in the rear cargo area. The unit does come with a detailed set of instructions to walk you through the installation process step by step. Basically you just need to locate the connection points in the rear cargo area and plug in your connectors. The connector with the green wire goes to the passenger side.

Other ones are going to favor the driver's side. It is custom fit for your vehicle. These plugs are going to match up perfect with the ports on the vehicle. They're going to snap lock together for a nice, tight, secure fit. Once you have those connected, you'll need to make a ground connection. Your ground wire is the white wire with a ring terminal already attached to it.

You want to get that grounded to a suitable grounding location, with the included grounding screw and then you'll need to mount the converter box. It's got some holes on each side that can be used as mount holes. That way you can get it secured out of the way with the included cable ties. Then you'll need to run the hot lead to the vehicle battery. The hot lead is the red wire coming out of the box. It has a butt connector already attached to it.

This gets connected to one end of the bundle. The other end of the bundle runs to the vehicle battery. Connects to one half of the fuse holder here at the butt connector. The other half of the fuse holder has a ring terminal on there. That's going to get connected to the positive post of the vehicle battery. It does come with your 20 amp fuse. It goes right in here. It's got the fuse cap that goes over to keep it safe and protected. Once you have that done, you can secure any excess or slack in the wiring with the included cable ties. Once your installation is complete, the connectors are going to be stowed in your rear cargo area. It is recommended that you use a small amount of terminal grease in all your electrical connections, like the plugs on the vehicle and the 4-pole connector itself. That grease is going to help prevent corrosion to the terminals and it is included with the kit. When it comes to the maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights, we're looking at 4.2 amps per circuit. For the tail lights we're looking at 7.5 amps per circuit. That's going to do it for today's look at the Hopkins plug-in simple vehicle wiring harness with 4-pole flat trailer connector.

See what our Experts say about this Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring

  • Why Does Trailer Wiring Require Power Wire Ran to Vehicle Battery
Not all vehicles can handle the additional amperage draw of the trailer taillights on the vehicle taillight circuits. Those vehicles need setup that draws power from the battery. Some vehicles have higher rated circuits that can handle this, and others need to have the power drawn straight from the battery to protect the taillight circuits. If you were to instead draw the power from the outlet you mentioned you would be bypassing the circuit protection mentioned and it would void the warranty.
