Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the rear threshold, cargo trays, and some interior lining to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11141854 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector. This product fits certain years of the Toyota Prium. You can use the vehicle fit guide located at etrailer.com to make sure this is a fit for your vehicle. It's going to provide a 4-way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle, which is going to power your trailer's signal lights. It is compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole, and 7-pole adapters. Adapters are sold separately. It comes with a dust cap for the 4-way flat connector.

That way you can cover up the connection points when your plug's not being used. It's also going to include a tail light converter. This is going to ensure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer's. Power module connects directly to the vehicle battery through the wiring to avoid overloading the vehicle's electrical system. The unit's going to connect quickly and easily. All you have to do is locate the connection points in your rear cargo area, plug in your connectors.

One connector goes to the passenger side. The other one goes to the driver's side. These plugs are going to match up perfectly with the ports on the vehicle. Once you have those connected, you'll simply need to make a ground connection, that's your white wire with a ring terminal already attached to it. Get that grounded to a nice, clean metal location with the included grounding screw. Then mount your converter box to an out-of-the-way location.

It's going to have two mounts on each side or one mount on each side, two total. You can mount it to get it out of the way with the included cable ties. Just tie it off to something that's going to be a safe area for the box. It's really easy to get mounted. After you get that done, you'll need to run the hot lead to the vehicle battery. The hot lead's the short, red wire coming out of the box.

It needs to get connected to one end of the bundle of red wire. One of the things I like about the wiring system is that the connectors are already attached. The butt connector is already on there. You attach this red wire to one end of the bundle, other end of the bundle connects to 1/2 of the fuse holder with the butt connector already on it. Other end of fuse holder has a ring terminal already attached to it, and that connects to the positive post of the vehicle battery. It does come with your 15-amp fuse. Goes directly into the fuse holder. It's got the cap on there to keep it safe and protected. Once you have that done, you can secure any excess or slack in the wiring with the included cable ties. Once the installation's complete, the 4-way connector is going to be stowed in your rear cargo area. It is recommended that you use a small amount of terminal grease on all your electrical connections like the plugs on the vehicle and 4-pole connector itself. This grease is going to help prevent corrosion to the connection points. It is included with the kit. That's going to do it for today's look at the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector.

Very nice harness and works fine. Easy to assemble. Assembly instructions needed to be clearer, though.

Toyota Prius

This was a life saver. NO cutting or splicing needed. Plug it in and you are done.
The Prius does require a bit of "take apart" to get to the connectors but it is worth it.
Makes for an easy and clean installation.

Definetly worth the price and I am glad that I purchased it.

Product was easy to install as stated. Could have kept all lighting wires in one uniform gauge and power wire could have been made with only one splice point instead of two. i think this product is an expense option to the standard free coupler that comes with your trailer, but if you want to be able to transfer unit to a younger year vehicle in the next 5 years this product would make that easier to do.

have no installed yet but the last one took 15 minutes with no major splicing to lights
