Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - 40185 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow Vehicle Wiring Harness. This product is going to fit a 2005-2008 Ford F150. It's designed to replace the 4-pole trailer connector that was or is on your truck. Each vehicle's specific connector is going to be pre-wired. It's going to use the original OEM connectors for a watertight protection, a guaranteed fit, and a factory look. When installing this, you don't have to worry about cutting or splicing or taping any of your wires. The unit is going to be constructed of 16-gauge wiring.

It's got tape going all around the the wiring, so it's going to stay grouped together. The plugs on the harness right here are going to match up perfectly with the ports on the vehicle. You do get the 4-pole connector on this end. It's got an easy-grip design. It's going to come with the dust cap to protect the connections points when the plug is not being used. On the packaging, it's going to have detailed, easy to follow instructions.

This can be used with 5-pole, 6-pole, or 7-pole adapters. Again, really simple installation. Unplug and remove the currently or previously installed 4-way flap. Then plug in these ports to the connection points. Then you got your new 4-way connector. It's going to come with a couple of zip ties.

That way you can secure any excess or slack in the wiring. It's going to come with your terminal grease. That gets applied to the electrical connections on the vehicle side and the 4-pole connector side to help prevent corrosion to the connection points. That's going to do it for today's look at the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow Vehicle Wiring Harness.

  • Troubleshooting 2018 Ford F-150 W/ 4-way Connector That Has Power But Doesn't Power Trailer Lights
Since your 2008 Ford F-150 has a 4-way connector and you tested it and it has power but your boat trailer lights are not working I would check that the connector does not have corrosion/debris on or in it causing a connection issue. It sounds like your truck came with the factory 4-way connector, and if that is the case then it does not have the correct connector to just replace the connector with a 7-way. Instead you would need to use the # 37185 which will plug into your factory 4-way...

  • Trailer Brake and Turn Signals Not Working When 7-Way Connector Plugged into 2011 Ford F-150
I would recommend checking the fuse box in your friends F-150 to make sure it has the fuses/relays installed for the trailer stop and turn lights. I looked up a fuse box diagram for a 2011 F-150 and it looked like the trailer tow left stop/turn relay is at location 37 and the trailer tow right stop/turn relay is at location 38. You will want to check the legend in the fuse box of your friend's vehicle to make sure those are the correct locations. I would also recommend using a circuit...

  • Comparing Class III and Class IV Trailer Hitches for a 2008 Ford F-150
There are going to be several differences between a Class III trailer hitch and a Class IV trailer hitch like Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 41933. One difference is how each attaches to the truck. The Class IV hitch requires more attachment points. I have included a link to the installation details for this hitch below that better illustrates where and how the hitch attaches to the truck. Even though there may be more attachment points, we still have the install difficulty rated at a 3 out...

  • Left Turn Signal Not Working on 2012 Ford F-150 4-Way Trailer Connector All Other Functions Work
You may have a bad relay in your 2012 Ford F-150. Under the hood in the power distribution box check the relay in location 37. The easiest way to see if a relay is bad is to use a known good one in its place. You may have to get this relay from a Ford dealer.

  • Will Curt Trailer Hitch C13352 Fit a 2005 Ford F-150 with Vibration Dampener
The Curt trailer hitch # C13352 will fit all models of the 2005 Ford F-150 with or without the vibration dampener. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view. If you plan on doing some towing, I recommend the etrailer ball mount kit, # EBMK4, which comes with a ball mount, interchangeable ball set, a hitch pin with clip, and a carrying bag. For trailer wiring use # 18252 if the truck does not have a factory tow package. Use # 40185 if you need to replace a...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Stop and Turn Lights
On a 4-pole trailer connector like # 40185 brake and turn lights are carried on the same wire; yellow for the left brake and left turn light and green for the right brake and right turn light. Running lights for both sides of the trailer are carried on the brown wire. Since you tested your truck connector with a circuit tester like # PTW2993 and found that the correct signals are present on the pins for the yellow and green wires when you activate the brake and turn light functions, this...

  • Trailer Left Turn and Tail Light Not Working on a Trailer Towed by a 2006 Ford F-150
What I think may be happening is there is the absence of a relay that will not allow certain functions to work on the trailer lights if the load on the system is great enough. I would consult the owners manual, find the location of any relays/fuses associated with the trailer wiring, and make sure they are in good working order or add the ones that may be missing. Another issue could be a faulty ground somewhere since your ground test did get it to partially work. You will want to check...

  • Towing Capacities, Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2005 Ford F-150 SuperCab 4WD With 5.4L V8
According to Ford, a 2005 Ford F-150 SuperCab with four-wheel drive and a 5.4L V8 will have a capacity between 7,300 lbs and 9,300 lbs depending on what wheelbase it has and what axle ratio it has. I recommend finding what yours is and looking in your owner's manual, which will have these capacities. Then for a trailer hitch you can add the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C14357 for a heavy duty, Class IV hitch and if you need to add a wiring harness the Plug-N-Tow (R) Vehicle Wiring Harness...

  • Trailer Turn Signals and Brake Lights Stopped Working with 2005 Ford F-150
The first thing to check is the trailer connector on your 2005 Ford F-150. With the trailer disconnected use a circuit tester such as # PTW2993 to test the vehicle side connector while someone sits in the cab of the truck and activates the turn signals and brake lights. If there is power at the truck side connector, then the problem is on the trailer. Make sure that the truck and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside where the wires attach and outside on the pins....

  • Trailer Lights Stop Working and Blinker Flashes when Connected to a 2007 Dodge Charger
There are a few things that you can check to determine what the problem may be on your 2007 Dodge Charger. First check the connectors for the harness and where they connect to the vehicle. You may find a bent terminal that you can put back into place. If the trailer has a lot of extra lights then it could be overloading the harness and the electrical system on your 2007 Dodge Charger. The system is rated for a maximum of 1 stop/turn light per side (7.5 amps), and a maximum of tail light...

  • Lights Not Working on Camper Towed by 2004 Ford F150 Using 4-Pole To 7-way Adapter
You said that the adapter is getting power, but is the 7-way on the adapter putting out power on the lighting circuits? You'd need to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 on the 7-way as each taillight function is activated, to check it. If the 7-way on the truck tests out okay, but won't work on the trailer (which works on other vehicles) try using the truck with a different trailer if possible. This will 100 percent rule out the truck as being the problem. You still might have a...

  • Replacement 4-Way Recommendation for a 2006 Ford F-150
The Hopkins 4-way part # 40185 has been confirmed as a fit for your 2006 Ford F-150 and would work well for you. It has a ground wire built into the harness connectors so it would not require the use of an additional ground wire.

  • Installing a 7-Way on a 2006 Ford F-150
I do have a solution for you to install a 7-Way connector on your 2006 Ford F-150 but, as you stated, both the Tekonsha # 118247 and the # 118242 are not compatible. If you have the US Car Connector at the rear of your F-150 then you can simply install the Reese # 74682. If, however, you do not already have a 7-Way that you are trying to replace you will need to install the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow # 40185 as well as the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. The # ETBC7 will plug into the Hopkins...

First, check to see if the running light circuit on the 7-Way on your 2011 Ford F-150 has power using a circuit tester such as # PTW2992. If it does not then there is likely a fuse blown or blown or missing relay. Use the owners manual to locate any fuses/relays related to the tow package wiring. If there is power on the truck side connector then plug in the adapter and make sure there is power on the outside of it. If there is not then the issue is with the adapter. If there is power...

  • Trailer Lights Not Fully Working on a Trailer Towed by a 2007 Ford F-150 with Factory Tow Package
It does sound like a ground problem. Most wiring issues are due to a bad ground connection. But first, I do recommend checking the trailer and vehicle side connectors for dirt or corrosion in and behind the plugs. That can cause the problem as well and it is the easiest thing to check. After that, if you still have issues, start checking all of the grounds starting with the truck side trailer connector and working back to the tail lights on the trailer. The grounds should all be connected...

The Draw-Tite Class III 2 Inch Hitch, part # 41549, that you have referenced will fit your 2005 Ford F-150 long bed. This hitch has a gross towing weight capacity of 6,000 lbs and a tongue weight capacity of 600 lbs. I am including a link to the installation instructions on the Draw-Tite hitch. The # 51020 hitch is listed as a Pro Series hitch that fits 1997 to 2004 Ford F-150, so it is not designed for your 2005 vehicle. If you will be towing with this hitch I would also recommend the...

  • What to Test When There is no Power to a Vehicles 7 Way or 4 Flat
The fuses are typically the place I start when troubleshooting a plug with no power, but as you have completely replaced your fuse box, that is a bit of a moot point. What is most likely causing the lack of power is damage to one or more wires. Using a tester, like the Circuit Tester # PTW2993, you will need to test the pins on the plug. If you have a 7 Way connection, the 2 o'clock position will be your 12-volt power, the 3 o'clock position will be the right turn signal and right brake...

  • Troubleshooting Tail Lights Not Working When Brakes are Applied on a Boat Trailer
It sounds like you have a ground issue on your trailer with new lights. It sounds like when the lights are drawing their maximum amperage (when the brake lights are on) the draw is too much and it is shorting out the lights. I would check the wiring for the lights, especially the ground wires, for loose wiring or not being grounded to a clean surface and fix as necessary. If the grounds are good, the other potential problem is that you might be using too many lights on your boat trailer,...

First thing you should do at this point is test the 4-way of the wiring harness with a circuit tester part # 3808 for voltage on all of the right pins when the taillight signals are being applied. Just like in the video I attached. If the voltage checks out there but the trailer lights still don't function right then the problem is on the trailer wiring. That would mean that problem is either due to a ground issue or a short issue. Make sure that the trailer side connector are clean and...

The 2007 Ford F-150 either came equipped, from the factory, with a 7-way trailer connector or none at all. Since you don't have a trailer connector at all on yours you'll need to start by adding a 4-way connector like the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow, part # 40185. It plugs right into the truck's wiring behind the rear bumper. The first thing I recommend is to check the vehicle side trailer connector using a circuit tester like # PTW2979 if you need one. Have someone sit in the vehicle and run through the lighting functions while you test the trailer connector with the circuit tester. If not all the functions work, you may need some relays.
