Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - 40185 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow Vehicle Wiring Harness. This product is going to fit a 2005-2008 Ford F150. It's designed to replace the 4-pole trailer connector that was or is on your truck. Each vehicle's specific connector is going to be pre-wired. It's going to use the original OEM connectors for a watertight protection, a guaranteed fit, and a factory look. When installing this, you don't have to worry about cutting or splicing or taping any of your wires. The unit is going to be constructed of 16-gauge wiring.

It's got tape going all around the the wiring, so it's going to stay grouped together. The plugs on the harness right here are going to match up perfectly with the ports on the vehicle. You do get the 4-pole connector on this end. It's got an easy-grip design. It's going to come with the dust cap to protect the connections points when the plug is not being used. On the packaging, it's going to have detailed, easy to follow instructions.

This can be used with 5-pole, 6-pole, or 7-pole adapters. Again, really simple installation. Unplug and remove the currently or previously installed 4-way flap. Then plug in these ports to the connection points. Then you got your new 4-way connector. It's going to come with a couple of zip ties.

That way you can secure any excess or slack in the wiring. It's going to come with your terminal grease. That gets applied to the electrical connections on the vehicle side and the 4-pole connector side to help prevent corrosion to the connection points. That's going to do it for today's look at the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow Vehicle Wiring Harness.

  • Troubleshooting 2013 Ford F-150 Trailer Wiring that Blinkers Stopped Working
Sounds like you may have some blown fuses under the hood of your 2013 Ford F-150. Check the fuse box for trailer wiring fuse locations and replace as necessary as it sounds like the turn signal circuit fuses have blown. This circuit most likely blew from a short circuit on your trailer wiring. Before you reconnect your trailer wiring I would check the wiring for the turn signals and fix any cut or exposed wire on the circuit that could be causing the short.

  • Wiring Harness For a 2004 Ford F-150 New Body Without Factory Tow Package
For your 2004 Ford F-150 new body, I would recommend using the Tow Ready Custom Fit Wiring Harness, # 118247. This wiring harness will plug into a connector that is located along the drivers side frame rail behind the back bumper and does not require any splicing. I have attached the installation instructions that show where the vehicle side connector is located and where to connect the relay. I have also added a photo showing the location of the vehicle side connector For a smooth factory...

  • Which Hitch Will Fit a 2005 Ford F-150 With the Flare Sides and Short Bed
I can confirm that the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13352 will fit on your 2005 Ford F-150 with the short bed and Flare-sides. I've added a photo that we have on the product page of this hitch installed on the same truck for you to check out. If you also need a wiring harness for this truck, I recommend using the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow # 40185, which will plug into the US Car Connector port under the vehicle on the driver's side and allow you to have a 4 way...

  • Trailer Turn Signals and Brake Lights Stopped Working with 2005 Ford F-150
The first thing to check is the trailer connector on your 2005 Ford F-150. With the trailer disconnected use a circuit tester such as # PTW2993 to test the vehicle side connector while someone sits in the cab of the truck and activates the turn signals and brake lights. If there is power at the truck side connector, then the problem is on the trailer. Make sure that the truck and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside where the wires attach and outside on the pins....

  • Trailer Lights Not Fully Working on a Trailer Towed by a 2007 Ford F-150 with Factory Tow Package
It does sound like a ground problem. Most wiring issues are due to a bad ground connection. But first, I do recommend checking the trailer and vehicle side connectors for dirt or corrosion in and behind the plugs. That can cause the problem as well and it is the easiest thing to check. After that, if you still have issues, start checking all of the grounds starting with the truck side trailer connector and working back to the tail lights on the trailer. The grounds should all be connected...

  • Troubleshooting Tail Lights Not Working When Brakes are Applied on a Boat Trailer
It sounds like you have a ground issue on your trailer with new lights. It sounds like when the lights are drawing their maximum amperage (when the brake lights are on) the draw is too much and it is shorting out the lights. I would check the wiring for the lights, especially the ground wires, for loose wiring or not being grounded to a clean surface and fix as necessary. If the grounds are good, the other potential problem is that you might be using too many lights on your boat trailer,...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Stop and Turn Lights
On a 4-pole trailer connector like # 40185 brake and turn lights are carried on the same wire; yellow for the left brake and left turn light and green for the right brake and right turn light. Running lights for both sides of the trailer are carried on the brown wire. Since you tested your truck connector with a circuit tester like # PTW2993 and found that the correct signals are present on the pins for the yellow and green wires when you activate the brake and turn light functions, this...

Yes, the Curt Trailer Hitch for the Ford F-150, 2007, part # C13365, can be used on all models of 2007 Ford F-150s, so it will work on your 2007 Ford F-150. If your 2006 Ford F-150 has a factory tow package, the Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 40185, that you referenced is the correct harness. If your truck does not have a factory tow package, you will need Draw-Tite Wiring, # 18252. This is a hardwire 4-Flat. You will need access to the taillight wiring. The yellow wire is left turn and stop. The brown wire is running lights. The green wire is right turn and stop. The white wire is ground. If you just need to replace a broken 4-Way,...

  • What to Test When There is no Power to a Vehicles 7 Way or 4 Flat
The fuses are typically the place I start when troubleshooting a plug with no power, but as you have completely replaced your fuse box, that is a bit of a moot point. What is most likely causing the lack of power is damage to one or more wires. Using a tester, like the Circuit Tester # PTW2993, you will need to test the pins on the plug. If you have a 7 Way connection, the 2 o'clock position will be your 12-volt power, the 3 o'clock position will be the right turn signal and right brake...

  • No Left Hand Turn Signal On a 2006 Ford F-150
If you don't have power on the left hand stop/turn signal pin on the trailer connector for your 2006 Ford F-150 then you likely either have a blown fuse or a loose/severed wire. The fuse for this circuit is located in the engine bay fuse box, slot 42 which is a 10 amp fuse. If this fuse is good then check the wires at the back of the trailer connector and work your way back to see if any breaks are present. If you still can't find anything wrong then you may just need to replace the...

  • Comparing Class III and Class IV Trailer Hitches for a 2008 Ford F-150
There are going to be several differences between a Class III trailer hitch and a Class IV trailer hitch like Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 41933. One difference is how each attaches to the truck. The Class IV hitch requires more attachment points. I have included a link to the installation details for this hitch below that better illustrates where and how the hitch attaches to the truck. Even though there may be more attachment points, we still have the install difficulty rated at a 3 out...

For your 2008 Ford F-150, I recommend the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow (R) Vehicle Wiring Harness # 40185 and then use # 37185 to give you the additional wiring features. I recommend using # 10-2-1 for wiring sold by the foot. This will allow you to add a brake controller like # 90195 to your vehicle using wiring harness # 3035-P. There should be a blue (brake) and orange or red (12V) wire at the end of the drivers side frame rail for easy connection. I've attached a video to assist. You may...

The Tow Package Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector for the 2004 F-150, item # 118247, will not work on the 2005 model year Ford F-150. There was a were changes for the 2005 model year and the wiring package was changed on the Ford Trucks. To wire your vehicle for a 7-way connector you will need a 4-way connector first. • Running Lights Work But Brake Lights and Turn Signals Do Not Work on Coleman Camper
The best way to start troubleshooting your truck and trailer is to disconnect the two and test each one separately. If you have access to a different tow vehicle or trailer you can test using one of these to isolate the problem to either your truck or camper. Inspect both the vehicle and trailer connectors for signs of dirt, discoloration or corrosion. Even very slight greenish or whitish discoloration on the connectors can interfere with signal transmission. You can try cleaning the...

Many trailers actually do not have reverse lights but if yours does, you will want to check the center pin on the 7-Way connector on your truck to see if it is working. Use a circuit tester like # 3808 if needed to test the pin. If this pin does not show power when the vehicle is in reverse, then you will need to route a wire to the reverse light circuit on the truck to get it to work. It is also possible that you will need to check the fuse on the truck related to the reverse light circuit...

  • Replacement 4-Way Recommendation for a 2006 Ford F-150
The Hopkins 4-way part # 40185 has been confirmed as a fit for your 2006 Ford F-150 and would work well for you. It has a ground wire built into the harness connectors so it would not require the use of an additional ground wire.

This sounds like a classic bad ground problem. To make sure it is a problem on the trailer and not the vehicle, disconnect the trailer and test the trailer connector on the vehicle. Use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 if needed. Have someone sit in the vehicle and run through the functions. If everything is working on the vehicle connector then that would indicate an issue on the trailer, probably a bad ground. The Plug-N-Tow # 40185 that you referenced has been confirmed as a fit for your 2005 Ford F-150 so if installed properly it should work just fine. Normally when what you described happens the problem is that the wiring harness just isn't making a good connection and would just need to be double checked that it is plugged in properly. Since you were having issues with your trailer wiring prior the problem could be something else related to the lighting of the truck. However, typically...

  • Blown Fuse & Relay with New Utility Trailer Running Lights
One possibility is that the running lights on the new trailer are simply drawing too much current and are blowing the fuses. Trailers can be equipped with either high-efficiency LED lights or standard incandescent bulbs, which draw about 10 times the power. If the new trailer has many more running lights than the boat trailer, and/or if they are incandescent types, then they may be overloading the vehicle wiring. It is also possible that the running light wiring is pinched, has a bare...

Since you don't have a trailer connector at all on yours you'll need to start by adding a 4-way connector like the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow, part # 40185. It plugs right into the truck's wiring behind the rear bumper. The easiest to check would be the trailer side connector. With the trailer connected, test the wires right behind the trailer side connector using a circuit tester like # PTW2993. If no signals are coming through, then you know the connector is bad and it will need to be replaced. While you are at the trailer side connector,...

I would consult the owners manual, find the location of any relays/fuses associated with the trailer wiring, and make sure they are in good working order or add the ones that may be missing. Another issue could be a faulty ground somewhere since your ground test did get it to partially work. You will want to check...
