Quickly and easily install a 4-way trailer connector on your Ford Explorer with this custom harness. T-connector plugs directly into existing wiring. Powered converter reduces strain on wiring system.
Features:
This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.
Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.
It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.
A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.
Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins Plug In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with a Four Pull Flat Trailer Connector. This product fits a 1992 to '94 Ford Full Size Van, '95 to '01 Ford Explorer, '97 to '01 Mercury Mountaineer, 2001 to 2003 Ford Escape and a 2001 to 2003 Mazda Tribute. This is going to provide a four way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer signal lights. It is compatible with five pull, six pull and seven pull adapters. Adapters are sold separately. It comes with a dust cap for the four way flat connector. That way you can cover up the connection points when your plug's not being used.
The black box on the unit is the included tail light converter. This is going to ensure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer's. The power module connects directly to the vehicle battery through the wiring to avoid overloading the vehicle's electrical system. The unit is designed to connect quickly and easily. You don't have to worry about cutting or splicing any wires. All you have to do is locate the connection points behind the tail lights and then you're going to have a connector that goes to the passenger side of the vehicle and one that goes to the driver's side.
Then you're going to have a third connector right here. Again all those connection points are at the rear of the vehicle. Locate those according to the included instructions and then plug them in. This is a custom fit wiring harness so the plugs on the harness are going to match up perfectly with the ports on the vehicle. Once you have all those plugged in you'll need to make a ground connection. That's going to be your white wire.
Has a ring terminal all ready attached to it. You can get that grounded to a nice clean metal surface with the included grounding screw. Then you'll need to mount the converter box using the cable ties provided with the kit. Once you have that done you can run your hot lead to the vehicle battery. The hot lead is this red wire that comes out of the box. Has a butt connector all ready attached to it.
This gets connected to one end of the bundle of wiring. The other end of the bundle runs to the vehicle battery and gets connected to one half of the fuse holder here at the butt connector. The other half of the fuse holder gets attached to the positive post of the vehicle battery. It's got a ring terminal all ready attached to that. Then it's also going to come with your fifteen amp fuse that goes directly in here and its got the fuse cap on it that goes over it to keep it safe and protected. Once you have that completed you can go ahead and secure any excess or slack in the wires with the included cable ties. Once your installation is complete the four way connector is going to be stowed beneath the vehicle near the trailer hitch. We do recommend using a mounting bracket to keep the connector secured and easily accessible. Mounting brackets are sold separately and can be found right here at etrailer.com. The kit also comes with a small packet of terminal grease. We recommend that you apply this to the electrical connections like the plugs on the vehicle and the four pull connector itself. That grease is designed to help prevent corrosion to the connection points. That's going to do it for today's look at the Hopkins Plug In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the Four Pull Flat Trailer Connector.

Quickly and easily install a 4-way trailer connector on your vehicle with this custom harness. T-connector plugs directly into existing wiring. Powered converter reduces strain on wiring system. This product failed only 91 days after it had been installed. If you look at the warranty, you will notice that it only has a 90 day warranty. This adapter was not in every day use. It was hooked to a trailer wiring harness a maximum of seven (7) times. When it failed, it caused other electrical problems in my 1996 Ford Explorer even when it was not connected to a trailer wiring harness. I had to pull the fuse feeding power to the adapter to clear up the electrical problems. I would not recommend this product. I will not be buying any more Hopkins products. It is way to much money to pay for a product that only functions for 91 days.
