Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area. You will have to remove the trunk floor coverings and the rear and side scuff panels to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Curt T-connector vehicle wiring harness for the 4 pull flatbed trailer connector. This product fits certain years and models of the Scion iA. It's going to provide a 4 way flat connector at the back of the vehicle to power your trailer signal lights. This is compatible with 5 pull, 6 pull, and 7 pull adapters. Adapters are sold separately, and it's going to come with a dust cap for the 4 way flat connector. That way you can cover up the connection points when the plug's not being used. The black box right here, this is going to be the included tail light converter.

This is going to insure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer's. The pad module is going to connect directly to the vehicle battery through the wiring to avoid overloading the vehicle's electrical system. It's going to be constructed using surface bot technology, so that's going to offer consistent and reliable performance. What that does is it basically maximizes the trailer light yield and intensity while producing minimal heat, and it's going to ensure superior operation even in rough road conditions. Now when it comes to installing the unit, pretty simple process. All you have to do is look at the connection points in your rear cargo area and plug in your T-connectors.

One side is going to go to the driver side of the vehicle, the other side is going to go to the passenger side. These plugs are going to match up perfectly with the ports on the vehicle. Once you have those connected, you'll need to make a ground connection. That's going to be your white wire with the ring terminal attached to it. You want to get that grounded and a nice clean metal surface.

It does come with a grounding screw to help make that process easier. Then you'll need to mount your converter box, that's going to be the black box. You can mount it using some double sided adhesive tape. You want to get it mounted to a nice clean out-of the-way location. Then you'll need to run the hot lead to the vehicle battery. The hot lead is going to be the small black wire right here.

This is going to get connected to the bundle of black wire with one of the included butt connectors. The other end of the black wire runs up to the vehicle battery, it gets the other butt connector attached to it, it connects to 1 half of the fuse holder. The other half of the fuse holder is going to get a ring terminal attached to it and get connected to the positive post of the vehicle battery. It's also going to come with inaudible 00:02:02 fuse, goes right here in the fuse holder. Then it's got the fuse cap to keep it safe and secure. Now once you have all that done, you can use the included zip ties to secure the excess wiring that you may have, just going to keep your wires up and out of the way. Once your installation's complete, the 4 way connector's going to be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area. It's also recommended that you use a small amount of dielectric grease on all your electric connections, like the plugs on the vehicle and the 4 pull connector itself. That grease is going to do a great job at preventing corrosion to the connection points. If you need some of that it is sold separately, you can find it here at etrailer.com. The unit's also going to come with your detailed installation instructions to help walk you through the whole process step-by-step. When it comes to the maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights, we're looking at 3 amps per circuit but for the tail lights we're looking at 6 amps per circuit. That's going to do it for today's look at the Curt T-connector vehicle wiring harness with the 4 pull flat trailer connector.

I have used several of these wiring harnesses. I have found them easy to install, the most difficult step being running the wire from the battery to the unit at the back of the vehicle so that it is secure, and kept away from any hot or moving part. It is hard to give specifics for this as every vehicle is different. The rest of the installation is almost a no-brainer.

  • Should Power Wire for Powered Trailer Wiring Run Through Interior or Exterior
When routing the power wire for the install of a powered trailer wiring harness like part # C56311 you have the option to run it through the interior and then out through the firewall or you can run it to the outside of the vehicle at the rear of the vehicle through a grommet in the trunk and then route it up to the battery that way. It really depends on how you would prefer. Most commonly through the exterior is the method used. I attached a help article that covers the topic of running...
