Ellen: Hey everybody. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com and we're taking a quick look at the GSI Outdoors Solo Mess Kit. This is going to be a great way to bring all of the things you'll need for a picnic, for camping, hiking, or whatever the case might be and you want to have a nice meal in the great outdoors. I think this is a really nice kit as well if you want to reduce your carbon footprint by not having any kind of paper plates or needing to use any kind of styrofoam or anything else like that, you'll be able to use and reuse this set for many years to come. It's pretty nice as far as the feel of everything, I think it should make a great addition to any camper's kit, any RVer, or just somebody who wants to have a reusable picnic kit, wherever you might want to go.So let's take a closer look at what actually comes with the kit. So you'll get this mesh bag to keep everything together and transport.

Also helps to dry stuff after you wash it, especially if you're out camping or anything like that and you don't want to make things get all moldy or mildew-y or anything like that. It should have plenty of air, so even once you put stuff away, there's still plenty of air flow that can get through here so it can all dry. So you can hang this outside of your tent, off the little loop and make sure everything stays nice and dry. So just set that off to the side for now, we can take a look, we get our cutlery set. So we get our knife, fork and spoon, a cup, a bowl, and our plate.Now these are all going to be made of polypropylene.

So that is completely recyclable and they are BPA free. So a safe set to use and reuse again and not have to worry about anything like that. The cutlery does come with this little piece that keeps everything together. To get this apart I find it's easiest to just kind of stick your thumbnail in between these two little pieces to separate it. I think you can also just kind of pull on it to get those taken apart.

Then of course you can use your knife and fork at the same time. These are pretty good heft to them. Definitely sturdier than any kind of just disposable plastic ware that I've seen, without actually trying it on a steak or something like that. I can't say if this is going to cut through a steak very well, but I think it should definitely work on fish, chicken or anything else, and it probably can get through steak pretty well. You might just have a little bit of patience, especially if you like your steak well done or ruined in my opinion, but everybody's different.So I also liked that the spoon is pretty nice and wide.

So even if you're eating something kind of chunky, like a chowder or a stew, you get a good bowl there on the spoon to give you plenty of room to gobble that up. The plate also has a nice depth to it. I like that the edges of that are kind of high, so you don't have to worry about anything running off the edge. So maybe you want to have a bigger portion of that stew or chowder in something like this, it makes a really nice soup bowl with kind of a nice deep basin or a wide basin with kind of a shallow edge, or you can of course use the smaller bowl.A nice thing about the cup is that it has had, or excuse me, it does have measurements printed into the edge. I know it's going to be hard to see on camera, but they are there. So this is a cup and a half. If you go to the very top and then it goes down in quarter cup increments. So all in all, I think this makes a really smart kit. It's just easy to use. Again, it should be usable for many years to come. Once it's worn out, you can always recycle it. So it's going to be a much more environmentally friendly way to bring everything that you'll need on that trip without having to waste a bunch of paper or plastic.Now, some people do want to know if these are going to be microwave safe. The manufacturer does not recommend that you use them in the microwave, but I have seen some people who say that they have put it in the microwave and they haven't had any issues. The main thing I think will be that it's going to wear them out faster or wear them prematurely. It also can damage them. So again, not recommended by the manufacturer, but you know, you can try it out if you want to, but kind of take it at your own risk is what I'd say there. This all can be put into the dishwasher. It's top rack only, but it can be put into a dishwasher, so that should make life a little bit easier there. If that's something that interests you.All in all, again, I think this is a really nice kit. I think everything feels really nice. It should wear well again, BPA free, which is kind of hard to find for this kind of stuff. So that's always a nice to see.
