Bolt-on surge brake actuator with adjustable drop channel lets you mount a coupler attachment (sold separately) in 1 of 5 positions to fit your application. Efficient roller design reduces resistance.

Features:

  • Hydraulic actuator activates trailer's brakes when tow vehicle slows or stops
  • Offset adjustable channel has 5 different mounting positions for coupler (sold separately)
    • Built-in drop is great for tall trailers
  • Unique roller design reduces resistance during telescoping to create straight-line movement
  • Sturdy, durable steel construction resists bending in jackknife situations
  • Corrosion-resistant zinc-plated finish
  • Breakaway kit included
  • Bolt-on installation

Specs:

  • Application: trailers with disc brakes
  • Gross towing weight: 20,000 lbs
  • Maximum tongue weight: 2,000 lbs
  • Mounting: straight, 3" wide trailer tongue
  • 1-Year warranty

Note: Because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes.

When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Adjustable Channel Design

The adjustable channel on this trailer brake actuator allows for ultimate versatility. Mount almost any type of coupler (sold separately) - from a standard ball coupler to a lunette ring or clevis attachment - to fit your specific application. In addition, the 3 mounting positions on the channel let you adjust the height of the coupler. Just place the coupler so that it matches the height of the ball mount or other hitch attachment on your tow vehicle and you will be able to tow your trailer levelly.

This actuator is great for tall trailers. This is because the adjustable channel is positioned so that the mounted coupler can sit below the actuator tube, allowing for a greater drop than with a standard center-mounted channel. As a result, you can line up your tall trailer with your tow vehicle's hitch for a level setup.

Video Transcript for Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4864100 Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're taking a look at a Titan Hydraulic Brake Actuator. This hydraulic actuator activates your trailer's brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Now, when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder and this, in turn, supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.Located here at the back, we have the reservoir. You have the reservoir cap for brake fluid, and then you have the connection point for the hydraulic lines.

Now, keep in mind that because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes. The gross towing weight capacity on this unit is 20,000 pounds. The maximum tongue weight capacity is 2,000 pounds, and it is a bolt-on installation. It mounts to a straight, three-inch wide trailer tongue. Now, the offset adjustable channel has five different mounting positions for a coupler. Couplers are sold separately, but one of the really neat things about this unit is this portion here.

Again, this is the adjustable channel. It allows ultimate versatility, so you can mount almost any type of coupler to the unit, from a standard ball coupler to a lunette ring or clevis attachment. That way, you can ensure that this unit is going to fit your application. In addition, the multiple mounting positions on the channel let you adjust the height of the coupler, so all you have to do is place the coupler in a location so that it matches the height of the ball or other hitch attachment on your tow vehicle. That way, you're able to tow your trailer as level as possible. Now internally, it has a unique roller design, which is designed to reduce resistance during telescoping to create straight line movement.

The built-in drop is great for taller trailers. We're looking at a sturdy, durable steel construction. It is designed to resist bending, especially in those jackknife situations. It has corrosion-resistant, zinc-plated finishing and it does come with the breakaway, so that's the chain right here. This would connect to the tow vehicle and in the event where the tow vehicle and the trailer disconnect, your tow vehicle will pull the chain, which will pull this lever and move it.

That will activate the brakes on the trailer, bringing it to an eventual stop.Again, it's bolt-on installation. It's designed for trailers with disc brakes and the last thing I want to mention is maintenance on the unit. You have grease zerks located here and here as well as here and here, so you can attach a grease gun. Apply the appropriate amount of grease to lubricate the internal components. Then the overall length measurement, I measure from very front to this point here. Got a measurement of 24 5/8 inches. Measuring to the back of these tabs here measured about 26 inches in overall length. That's going to do it for today's look at the Titan Hydraulic Brake Actuator.
