Video Transcript for Redline Trailer Brakes BP01-180 Review

Today, we're going to take a look at the replacement trailer brake magnet for the Dexter, Alko, and Hayes 12" electric trailer brakes, this part includes everything shown here on the table, the magnet itself, the spring, and the clip to hold the magnet into place. This magnet kit will allow you to replace the worn-out magnet on your 12" trailer brakes, and because you're replacing just the magnet, not the whole assembly, it will save you time and money. This part is designed to work with the following brake assemblies, it'll work with the Dexter 12" x 2" on a 6000 pound axle, the Alko 12" x 2" on the 6000 and 700 pounds axles, the after-1988, and the Hayes 12" x 2" 600 and 7000 pound axles after 1988. If you notice, the magnet is an oval design, and they do that to increase the efficiency of the magnet, and to also extend the life of the magnet. Just to give you an idea of the size on this, the width of it you can see is about 3 1/8", and the height going to be right at about 2". You also notice, when the wires come out of the magnet, they have a section of a protective sleeve over that, and the reason they do that is because, when this is installed in your brake assembly, that initial part of the wire is what goes through the backing plate, so you don't want the wires rubbing up against the backing plate and causing problems, so they put this nice, protective sleeve on here to protect the wires from getting damaged. Also, if you notice, it has the two wires, two black wires coming out of it. It doesn't matter which wire from the magnet is attached to the power or the ground, you just want to make sure that one of the wires is properly grounded, and then the other wire will be attached to your electric brake output circuit from your trailer connector.

That should do it for the review of the replacement trailer brake magnet for the Dexter, Alko, and Hayes 12" electric trailer brakes.

Everything I needed to replace the old brake magnets.

by:

I'll give a #4 for now, they were slow getting here and I only have one installed right now ! The real test is when I haul my 40' trailer down the road for a few thousand miles, then I will know how well they work.

They are doing exactly what they were designed to do !

by:

My trailer is very old. It is home built and the brake plates were welded on the axles and I had to turn the axles around to get the brake actuators to function in the proper manner. While I was working on it, I realized the magnets needed replacing, but the originals were of a brand I couldn't find. I managed to measure the old parts and found the correct replacement on etrailer.com at less then half the price a local trailer shop wanted for a similar part. The magnets were exactly the right part, they arrived a day sooner then I expected and the brakes are back together and functioning as advertised. Now if it would stop raining I could get the axles back under the trailer and get the brakes wired up again. I'm not complaining about the rain, and certainly am happy about the parts and quick service.

Thanks for checking back with me as I had completely forgotten the trailer brake issues I had last year. The brakes are still functioning fine and we are now using that trailer to haul logs and equipment on a regular basis with absolutely no problems with the brakes. I wish I had reworked them earlier and would recommend the parts I used to anyone with a similar issue.

by:

What I needed and got to me in time ! Easy to install. Also e-trailer has a slug of instructional videos. My brakes were sorely out of adjustment. A couple minutes reviewing the video and a few more adjusting the brakes and I'm a happy camper.

My order was correct and shipped promptly at a very reasonable shipping cost. Very satisfied with the service, I give it 5 stars

by:

Had one ready to replace this spring - the wire on the old one had gotten caught in the brake mechanism. Glad I ordered the kit.

by:

Works just fine. Takes about the same effort as replacing the whole brake unit. But is cheaper. If caught early enough, you only need the clip inside.

by:

Installation was easy and best of all they work! Many thanks to the Technical Support Team for helping me find the ones that match the trailer and troubleshoot that darn "beeping" noise coming from my truck brake controller.

by:

I thought had an issue with my wiring and after doing a little research I figured out it was more than likely due to worn magnets. I was able to locate the correct type, order, and replace the magnets fixing my problem! I saved money by installing them myself!

by:

All products bought are working perfectly. These parts are good quality for the money. And more importantly, E trailer's customer service is why I only buy my trailer parts from them.

by:

Very fast shipping, well packaged and a direct replacement for my worn magnets. Etrailer makes it easy to get the right part for my old 5th wheel.

by:

part was direct fit replacement, easy install works like the other 3 wheels.

by:

Product fairly priced, correct product shipped with the cost of shipping reasonable. Very satisfied.

by:

Magnet replaced an ALKO magnet. Same quality and design.

by:

Promptly shipped and it was the correct part.. Thanks E-Trailer, you never let me down..

by:

  • Trailer Brakes on 1 Axle are Weak on Tandem Axle Trailer
Having the tires off the ground only means that the brakes just have to stop the tires from spinning and not the momentum or weight of the trailer so it is not surprising that the trouble axle seems to work fine in that scenario. Usually when brakes are weak it is because they need to be adjusted. They need to be adjusted so that you hear a slight but constant drag of the pads on the inside of the drum. To see how to manually adjust trailer brake assemblies check out the video I attached,...

  • Troubleshooting Electric Trailer Brake Assembly Magnets
We have an article to assist with checking your brake magnets like you are stating. The resistance will go down because the brake magnets are connected in parallel. Since the voltage doesn't change, the amperage draw needs to increase to power the magnets. This is Ohms law in action based on my research. You obviously already have a multimeter like # PT89ZR so if you determine based on the article that you need to replace magnets, I recommend # BP01-180 for 12 inch Dexter assemblies...

  • What Replacement Brake Shoes and Magnets do I need for Electric Drum Brakes?
I have some parts you need for your brakes. Unfortunately, all of our brake flanges fall under the pilot hole diameter of 4 inches. The largest one we have is 3" like the Trailer Brake Mounting Flange for 3-1/2" Axles, 12-1/4" Brake Assemblies # 4-50. This is a 4-bolt square pattern. As far as the shoes, I recommend using 2 of the Replacement Shoe and Lining Kit for Dexter 12" x 2" Electric Brake Assembly - 7,000-lb # DX28FR. For the magnets, the parts you need are the Replacement Trailer...

  • Testing a Tekonsha Prodigy Brake Controller and Trailer Brake Magnets to Eliminate SH Code
The SH error code on the Prodigy indicates a general problem with the brake output circuit. In your case, in addition to the magnets possibly causing the problem, it is a good idea to check the rest of the system as well. I would check the magnets for wear before going on to test them with a meter. If the magnets show abnormal wear or if you can see the windings beginning to show through the friction surface of the magnet then they will need to be replaced. To further test your magnets,...

Thank you for the pictures. I have a solution for you but it does not look like we have any replacement shoes or springs for the measurements you have specified. For the dimensions you've given me I recommend the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - 12" - Right Hand item # 23-465, and left hand assembly item # 23-464.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes that Lock Up When Trailer Wiring is Connected
What it sounds like is happening is that the 12 volt accessory circuit on your trailer wiring is being mistakenly wired to the brake output circuit either by a short or something being miswired. I would first start at the 7-way of your truck and using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 check for voltage in all of the correct pins. I attached a diagram for you to use as a guide. Next, you can use a jumper wire from a 12 volt car battery to apply voltage on all of the different circuits...

  • Troubleshooting One Brake Locked Up on Trailer
Sounds like there could be a short in your trailer wiring for one of the brakes or there could have been a mechanical failure in that one brake assembly. The second possibility is more likely since only one brake was affected. First inspect the wiring to the affected brake (and the others too) to check for signs of damaged wires or worn insulation that could cause a short. If the short was near the one brake assembly then that might cause the issue to be isolated to the one brake. Also...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes that Lock Up When Connector is Connected
When we see this problem it's almost always with a 6-way trailer connector being used. The issue is that there are two ways that a 6-way is typically wired and the only difference is that the 12 volt accessory circuit and the brake output circuit are swapped. Anytime we see trailer brakes immediately locking up when connected and there's a 6-way involved this is the issue. What you need to do is swap the two circuits on the 6-way adapter or the 6-way connector and you'll be good.

For your 12" x 2" brake drum you can use either our part # AKBRKR-M12 or the Redline # BP01-180 to replace the brake magnet on your Hayes/Al-KO brake assembly. • Troubleshooting Electric Brakes That Energize When Not Connected to Tow Vehicle
Trailer electric drum brakes do make a humming sound when their magnets are energized with power from a trailer brake controller. This is normal behavior and it is usually possible to hear the energized brakes from about a foot away. If your brakes are being energized when the trailer is NOT connected to the tow vehicle this indicates an issue in the trailer wiring. Something is allowing 12V power to reach your brakes when it should not. Since the trailer is disconnected from the tow vehicle...

I spoke with my contact at Dexter Axle and if there is any question regarding capacity, he recommends going with a magnet for a 7K axle brake assembly. The magnet is interchangeable so if you do indeed have brake assemblies for a 6K axle, it will still work for you. The magnet will be just a bit stronger but will not cause you any issues. I sounds like you might be asking about a Trailer Breakaway Kit like # 50-85-313 which has LED indicators to tell about the charge status of the included emergency breakaway battery. One of these indicator lights will come on as needed to tell you if the battery is already charged, in the process of charging or if it is depleted. These LED lights use only a very, very small amount of power so they present no concern about power consumption. Please refer to the linked video for more details....

I do have a solution for you, however we don't have a replacement brake magnet available that will work on your older 6,000 pound Dexter Axles. The round magnets you have pictured are pretty old models that aren't made anymore and the current oval design won't be compatible as replacements. With this in mind your best option at this point will be to replace the brake assemblies themselves. For 6,000 pound assemblies the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Brake Kit # 23-458-459 will work great.
