Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The tire & wheel is going to be used as a spare on a 2023 Marlon boat trailer. I was kind of nervous about the hole spacing because my measurements weren’t really accurate.
It was a perfect fit & the galvanizing is nice & thick on the wheel. The tire is exactly the same diameter as mine & I couldn’t be happier..
Thank you..

The best tires for the price. The old set of Kenda Load Stars that these are replacing are 7 years old and are showing some minor cracks b/t the treads. So much easier and cost effective to order them already mounted. Ordered Mon. and delivered Wed. 1 day early! which has been the case with my orders from etrailer.

Still great tires. About 2,500 miles on them so far. 1,700 of those at 70-75mph without issues.

by:

The tire/wheel combination took a bit longer to deliver as it was out of stock temporarily but still arrived within 2-3 weeks of ordering. The tire/wheel shipped in a nice sturdy box, and upon opening was in perfect condition. The first thing I look for is the manufacture date of the tire, which showed it was produced about 6 months earlier which is pretty good, since all tires start to deteriorate from the day they are produced. This will be a spare for my EZ Loader 1,000# trailer and should work out great. As always the price and service at etrailer was terrific and included free shipping, so that's a big plus.

Upgraded my Jon boat from 8in to 12in tires . They fit perfect! Thanks to the recommendation from customer service . Got it on the first try!

Never ordered tires before but had to replace the dry-rotting existing tires on the trailer I had inherited from my dad's estate. A friend told me about this website and how great it was, so I thought I would visit it to check it out for myself. This website was VERY helpful and informative about the ins and outs of tires, rims, and critical measurements. I was also stepping up from 8" tires to 12" tires and was unsure about whether or not the new rims would fit on my existing hubs. The hole dimensions they provided led me to believe I could order new galvanized rims with the new tires and have a reasonable expectation for a good fit. So I ordered them, and even though we were in the midst of the corona virus lock-down, the tires arrived in sturdy boxes 3 or 4 days later. I cleaned the existing hubs and studs on the trailer, and slipped the new tires on without a hitch. Every one of them fit like a glove!
Very happy with this company and will be visiting them for more accessories and such - strongly recommend them to all my friends and to any one looking for a company with excellent product choices, great pricing, sturdy shipping packaging and quick delivery!

I am so glad to hear the tires worked out great for you! When mounting a tire with a fender, keep in mind that you usually want about 4 inches between the tire and the fender. This allows for maximum suspension travel so that your tire will not rub on the inside of the fender.

by:

Fit the trailer perfectly but more important is the service I got from etrailer. This is my second purchase form this website and in both instances (these tires and an electric connector for my truck) I wasn't 100% sure of the exact part. However an e-mail to etrailer and some pics and additional information and they identified the EXACT part I needed. Prices are good and the items shipped promptly. I could not be happier.

by:

Love my new tires and the awesome customer service. Only took five days from the time I ordered them to the time I received them. They look amazing on my trailer

by:

Tire great, rim great and bracket great. I thought it came with lock. Not a terrible situation but I watched the trailer video and I could’ve sworn the helpful gentleman said it came with a lock. Just curious. Thanks for the great product and quick response.

Ordered new tires and wheels for our boat trailer upgrade. Excellent quality and a perfect match to my wheels on my trailer. We are at one year mark and the tire is holding up great, no issue at all, so far. Etrailer is an excellent company to do business with. I called them and had a few question about sizing for my trailer. The associate I spoke with was very knowledgeable about the product, professional, and very pleasant to talk to. Excellent over all for their produce and service.

by:

Great quality need to get the trailer on the road for more information.

by:

Excellent service from e-trailer (as usual). Great tire, rolls well on both dirt roads or interstate.

by:

Products arrived on time as promised. Videos and tools provided to determine wheel hole pattern were great and allowed me to buy with confidence that I had the right spare for my trailer.

I replaced the tires and rims on my small boat trailer with this set. The tires have worn well and run smooth. Buying the set was cheaper than having just the tires replaced. Will buy again!

  • Does Load Range B Trailer Tire Size 4.80-12 Have Capacity for 500 lb Trailer
Wheel and tire combos that are 4.80-12 Load Range B mounted on a 5 lug wheel like the part # AM30590 have a weight capacity of 785 lb per whee/tire. That means that with two of them you'd easily have more than enough capacity for your 500 lb trailer.

The part # AM30590 would be a great spare wheel and tire replacement as long as you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern like what this has. Otherwise if you had a 4 bolt pattern you'd want the part # AM30630.

  • Are Trailer Tires Rated Individually or as Pairs
The Load Ranges and weight capacities that you see on our trailer tires are the rating per tire. So you would need to double that for the overall axle capacity. For example, the tire capacity of the part # AM30590 that you referenced is 785 lbs so when using two you would have a capacity of 1,570. You should note that the wheel on this is rated higher at 1,250 lbs. But you would be limited to the tire capacity since that is the lower figure. I also attached a link to a review video for...

  • Can Trailer Use Different Brand Tires if Size, Load Range, and Construction Is Same
Yes, you can use a different brand of trailer tire as long as everything you mentioned matches. Size (this is the most important to match obviously), construction (bias vs radial), Load Range, and tire pressure. You didn't mention what tire size you have but I attached a link to a page that has all of the trailer tires we offer. You can select the size you need from the filters and then from there the other options to see what would fit and work well.

The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range B # AM30590 is a similar tire and has a max rating of 60 psi. I can't confirm that your tires will be the same without the rating listed on the sidewall. You may want to consider changing the tires because they are old and do not have the max psi rating listed on the sidewall. If there is no speed rating listed, you also will need to consider 65 mph your max speed. I've attached an article to assist....

Having said that, going to a higher-rated tire such as the Load Range C Taskmaster # TT53012C is also not a good idea for your trailer. The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire and 12 Inch Galvanized Wheel Combo # AM30590 offers a maximum load capacity of 785 pounds when the tire is inflated to 60 psi. This means that a single tire can support up to 785 pound when properly inflated. If your trailer is a single axle trailer, two of the # AM30590 tire and wheel combos will offer a maximum load capacity of 1,570 pounds for the trailer. If it is a dual axle trailer, 4 of these wheels will offer 3,140 pounds of maximum load capacity....

  • What PSI Should be Ran in Trailer Tires that Have Different Load Ranges
For trailer tires you want to always use the max pressure that is listed on the sidewall of each tire. Doing so ensures that you get the max capacity for the tire. When the inflation pressure is higher that will indicate a higher load range. The Load Range B tire should have a maximum load of 785 lbs. listed on the tire. Because tire/wheel combos like the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30590 are assembled by the manufacturer, they do come with a certain amount of balancing already done when they are matched up; the high spot of the wheel is usually matched with the low spot on the tire.
