Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Great company to deal with for all your trailer needs... Period.

by:

Needed this trailer tire delivered to a hotel in South Carolina I was staying at as one of my tires had a nail in it. It came a timely manner and I was good to go. Great service and price.

by:

Great product with great customer service and shipping and handling!

by:

The tires have performed great. No issues and they are carrying a lot of weight. I recommend these tires.

by:

We could not be happier with this purchase and transaction. The prices were quite reasonable, for this market & product, and the free-shipping saved us nearly $200. They got here faster than expected at 10 days, each tire & rim assembly were boxed separately and arrived undamaged - see pictures. I will now have to have them balanced, as I see no balancing weights on the rims, which was expected. We also ordered a spare, which was to be delivered late, but it arrived with the shipment too. Very good! 5-star is well deserved. Thank you etrailer.com!

by:

Just put these tires on my Ranger dual axle trailer and they appear to be a quality tire and the etrailer customer team did an outstanding job processing my order and keeping me informed of the delivery tracking status. Great customer service!

by:

Website was very user friendly and shipping was on time. I’m definitely will buy my trailer tires here again. Had zero issues,Thanks guys!

by:

This was the 2nd boat trailer tire we have ordered from etrailer.com. The first time I searched locally for the needed tire with no results. A tire dealer actually told me about etrailer.com. I immediately found the tire I needed both times. I was able to track the tire from the time “it rolled out” until it was delivered. Great service and beyond prompt.

by:

All I can say is Wow!!! Despite my better judgment, I had initially purchased trailer tires from another source online last week. They were delivered with no protection and all 3 were damaged from shipping and had to be thrown away. They were also 4 year old date codes!!! I decided to look at etrailer as I had bought items from them in the past. My tires arrived in three days and each one was perfect condition and in separate boxes. Also the date codes are only a few months old so these tires are as fresh as I can get. Thank you for saving the day!!!

by:

I received the product on time as expected Great Service

by:

Great service, tires arrived quickly and were new date codes.

  • Aluminum Jaguar Trailer Wheel With 215/75R14 Tire For a Nitro Boat Trailer
Yes, the Aluminum Jaguar Trailer Wheel # LHSJ211G is a great choice for a boat trailer. As this is an aluminum wheel it will not rust or corrode like a steel wheel when it is in contact with water. You will need to pair a Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10229 with an Aluminum Jaguar Trailer Wheel # LHSJ211G as we currently do not offer this Jaguar wheel with a 215/75-14 tire already mounted. You could take a look at the Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" Aluminum...

  • Recommended 215/75R14 Load Range C Trailer Tire for Boat Trailer
The Taskmaster Providers # TR20514 are a decent tire, but I wouldn't say they're quite as good as the Goodyears. Personally I run the Kenda Karrier # AM10229 in a different size on my boat trailer and have been more than happy with them, and in my opinion they're a bit better than the providers. Wear has been great, they balanced out pretty easy, and from what I've seen dealing with trailer tires they're one of the best options out there. When I need tires again in the future I'll be buying...

It is possible that the Loadstar ST215/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire with 14" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM3S560 will fit your Shoreland'r boat trailer but you will want to double check the bolt pattern. Using the included help article you will want to measure your bolt pattern and verify your bolt pattern. If you do have the less common 5 on 4-1/4 bolt pattern there is two options. The first is replacing your hubs with ones that use the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern since we...

  • Can a ST215/75R14 Tire and a ST215/75D14 Tires be Used at the Same Time
Using a Bias ST215/75D14, like part # AM1ST90, and Radial ST215/75R14, like part # AM10229, tire at the same time on your trailer should only be done if there were an emergency. Since there is a difference in how those types of tires run, wear, and cool, you could end up having an uneven ride or tire failure. The ideal setup is to have all bias tires or all radial tires. That is the best way to stay safe and know that you will get the most life out of each tire.

  • Recommended Tire Pressure for Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10229
For optimal performance, long life and to realize their maximum load bearing capability, trailer tires should always remain inflated to the maximum pressure rating listed on the tire sidewall, which in the case of the Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire, # AM10229 is 50 psi. I will link you to our Trailer Tire FAQ article that contains other information that you might find helpful.

  • Switching From a 215/70R14 To a 215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire
You can change to a slightly larger tire like the Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10229 as long as you have adequate clearance to fit the larger tire. The new tire is going to be 3/4" taller overall. This will account to 3/8" taller in your fender area. A good rule is to use 3" for adequate clearance and to allow your suspension to articulate. There will be no difference in the width compared to your current tire. Be sure to also verify that you have the correct load rating...

  • Can Trailer With 205/75-15 Tires Use 215/75-14 Tires
Yes, you can replace your ST205/75R15 tires with ST215/75R14 tires like the Karrier # AM10229. The 14" tire will be 1" - 1-1/2" smaller in terms of diameter and about 1/2" wider. This means you will lose about 1/2" in height and gain the same on top for clearance. On the inside of the tire you will lose about 1/4" of clearance but that shouldn't be a problem. If you need a wheel and tire combo you can use the # AM32181.

This does not seem quite enough for your setup. Instead, I would recommend you go down to the slightly smaller ST205/75R14 and go up to the Load Range D Kenda Karrier Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10235. • Frequent Trailer Tire Blowouts and Dry Rot on a Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
Tires blowing out is usually caused by either overloading the tires or because of excessive heat generated when the tires are under inflated. But with all of the problems you are having there may be something else going on as well. I recommend having the trailer inspected for suspension wear. Any egg-shaped holes in the suspension components could be the root cause of the problem. If the axles are torsion axles without suspension then this would not be the case. I also recommend pulling...

If you just want tires, we have bias tire # AM1ST90 and for a radial we have # AM10229. Make sure not to mix radial and bias tires for best performance and longest life of the tires. Which the closest size we offer that is compatible is the ST215/75R14 like Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10229. This tire has a diameter of 26.8 inches which would be about an inch shorter in diameter than what you have. Is that too short? • Recommended Wheel and Tire Package For a Single Axle Boat Trailer Used With Several Highway Miles
I recommend the Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" Aluminum Wheel # AM32195 for your boat trailer. The Tire # AM10229 has a radial construction which increases life when used on the highway. It is load rated for up to 1,870lbs per tire and has a speed rating of 81mph. The Aluminum Wheel will resist corrosion better than coated steel wheels and since the aluminum is a better heat exchanger it will keep temps in the tire cooler and increase tread life. • Replacement 215/75-14 Trailer Tires for a Dual Axle Boat Trailer
Radial trailer tires are going to give you the best ride and they run cooler than bias ply tires so I recommend going with radials. For tire size 215/75-14 you would need radial tire # AM10229. It is rated for 1,870 pounds at 50 psi so 4 of them would have more than enough capacity for a 5,400 pound gross trailer weight. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire. The reason for this is that trailer tires have a thicker side wall than car tires....

  • Can ST215/75R14 Trailer Tire Replace ST205/75R14 Trailer Tire
I doubt you would run into any issues by going from a ST205/75R14 tire, like the Kenda Karrier # AM10235, to a ST215/75R14 tire, like the Kenda Karrier # AM10229, but you'll still need to verify that you have enough room to safely do this. The 205/75-14 tire has a 26.14" diameter and 7.99" section width while the 215/75-14 has a 26.8" diameter and 8.5" section width. Since the difference is about 1/4" you should be just fine.
