Determining Your Load Capacity

A common ratio for determining your winch load capacity is 2:1. For example, a 2,000-lb boat would require a 1,100-lb winch. There are extenuating factors, however, that will determine the appropriate winch size for your purposes.

The ratio can be stretched to 3:1 in instances when the trailer in use has high-quality rollers and is most commonly used on ramps where boats float most of the way onto the trailer.

In contrast, using a boat trailer that has wooden bunks, lacks self-alignment capabilities, and is most commonly used on ramps where the boat must be winched most of the way onto the trailer reduces the ratio to 1:1.

Note that pontoon trailers and other special designs require special consideration when determining winch capacity.

Determining Your Rolling Load Capacity

drawing

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the winch capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factor shown includes a 10 percent rolling friction factor. Note: A 5 percent - or 3 degree - incline is a 1/2' rise in 10'. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Shopped around a lot before I bought this. My boat is heavy (7500 lb) and the wench I had struggled. I took a chance on this as it was rated for the weight. I used the Anderson style connectors and installed a breaker near the battery. Pulled new wire rated for the amp draw. I couldnt be happier! This thing is a beast! Has no prob pulling my boat and cant see that it struggles at all. Highly reccomend. Photo is during installation. I put a cover over it due to my anchor comes close when launching and didnt want it to hit.

by:

They were exceptionally helpful in deciding which winch to buy. I got this for my pontoon boat on a slide bumper trailer. I wanted to make sure it would have enough power to pull my 24 ft pontoon. This winch is honestly one of the best purchases I have made for this boat. It easily pulls my boat up onto the trailer. Total time to load about 2 mins. I have had many envious looks at my electric winch. Thank you again. For the help in deciding which one to get.

nice product

by:

works perfectly.....great product and r eputation!

by:

The winch works as advertised. My boat with gear and fuel weighs in around 6500 lbs. My trailer has rollers so that does make it easier. It hauls it up ok until maybe the last 6 inches where it slows down a bit. One improvement I would make would be to have a better emergencey handle. It is quite small and if I ever had to use it I would imagine it would take forever and not sure I could generate enough leverage to pull the boat all the way onto the trailer.

by:

Yes I finished the winch installation, I have not tried at the boat ramp,
however I ran the winch and am very pleased. I am also pleased at the way your company does business. Thank you. George you asked for pictures, please find enclosed pictures.

Works great

by:

The winch appears to be good and everything it was advertised to be. However there are two problems with the wiring harness.

1. The bracket with the attached fuses is not designed to connect to a side terminal type battery. Actually I’m not sure how it would connect to an upper post battery unless there were secondary posts with wing nuts like found on a marine battery.
2. The positive side of the wiring harness is 25’ but the negative side is only 5’. If you ground the harness to your truck frame you may not be able to reach to the winch especially since the 9000 winch is for a larger boat which means the trailer yoke and support post might be further back.

I had this problem. I purchase some of the quick release adapters and made a five foot pigtail.

Works great. I use it on a 19 foot Lund Impact and a roller trailer without a problem. I recommend this product.

Great on a boat trailer. Makes loading a breeze. A wireless remote would make this winch even better. Currently in use with a 19 foot Lund boat on a Shorelander roller trailer.

by:

I have mounted the winch on my trailer. It was fairly easy. I had drill out 3/8 in. holes to 1/2 in., but alignment was already ok. I'm concerned about the 8 ft. ground cable. I'm thinking about putting a bolt through my truck bumper, putting a bolt through and clipping the ground to it.

by:

It pulls my boat onto the trailer with ease and it always worked. The big thing for me is how long will it last. If it works as well in 5 or 10 years I'll give it five stars.

by:

Winch was delivered 3 days after being ordered. I have used Etrailer over the past 6 years and had no issues with ordering, shiping, and their products. My source for all my boating/trailering needs.

by:

Etrailer had all the parts I was looking for in stock. The sales help was very good and the shipping was very quick. I shop here as often as I can

I will write a review when I use it

I RECEIVED ORDER YESTSERDAY. PLAN TO INSTALL WINCH AND BEARINGS TOMORROW . PRODUCTS LOOKS GOOD. TIME WILL TELL. THANKS FOR PROMPT SSERVICE.

by:

So far so good used @ 10 times and no problems pulling my 8000 lb. fish boat. The provided wire harness had to be lengthened to function but who cares the winch works great and a strap winch is the ONLY way to go with a boat of this weight.

free wheel froze up after two months of use.

The freewheel option allows the cable to be removed by hand. You will have to make sure that it is in the correct position to use the free wheel. If you have tried to manually adjust it and it is still not functioning properly, this item has a 2-year warranty.

by:

decent price, in stock, great communications & quick shipping.

by:

Very good product. Pulled my jet ski up on the lift like it was nothing.

by:

Exactly what I needed

by:

it's a good product

by:

they are great to deal with and will buy again

Looks very well built, haven't had a chance to mount it yet! Will update review after use!

  • Does the 9K Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch Come with a Remote
The Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch part # DL25215 is not compatible with a remote. There aren't really any dedicated boat trailer winches in this capacity with an included remote. The highest capacity for this type of winch with a remote is 3,000 lbs, the Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch part # DL25001. I have attached for you below a help article that goes over choosing the correct winch if you would like to take a look.

  • Winch Assembly and Strap Replacement for Personal Watercraft Trailer
If a winch assembly is used beyond its rated capacity, corroded from severe exposure to the elements or otherwise mechanically damaged in some way it may require replacement. If the main structure/housing is intact then it may only be necessary to replace the wire rope or nylon strap periodically if these show extreme wear or deterioration. Some times it may be necessary to replace a few components in the winch, but these repair kits are fairly simple and less costly than a whole new winch. In...

  • Boat Trailer Winch that Has Capacity for 18,000 lb Boat
With boat winches you generally only need 50 percent of the boats weight as the winch's weight capacity. So for a 18,000 lb boat like you have you'd need a winch with at least a 9,000 lb capacity. For that we have the Fulton XLT Powered Winch part # F500621 which has a 10,000 lb capacity and would be your best option. The strap is only 15 feet long though so you'd need to make sure you could get the boat within 15 feet from being fully on the trailer.

  • Recommended Trailer Winch for a 29 Foot Sea Ray SLX with Twin 350s on a Triple Axle Trailer
Sounds like a pretty nice beast of a boat you have! I would recommend the Dutton-Lainson Marine Electric Winch # DL25200 for your Sea Ray SLX, because of its 4,000lb capacity. Winch capacities vary depending on the nature of how they will be used. Factors such as the type of bunks on your trailer (rollers versus carpeted bunks), the amount of incline, the length of the winch cable or strap all affect the actual working capacity of a winch. Boat-size-to-winch capacity is generally 2 to...

  • Power Requirement for DL25215 Electric Winch
The 7-way 12V connection will not provide enough power for the Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch - Marine - 9,000 lbs # DL25215. The 12 volt pin will only provide approximately 2-4 amps on average when the vehicle is running, and that is why the 25 foot power wire with 8 foot ground is provided with this winch. It will allow you to easily connect to your tow vehicle battery directly or connect to a trailer battery. You may also be interested in the Dutton-Lainson Winch Cover # DL24051.

  • Wiring and Battery Current Requirements for Electric Boat Winches
An electric winch will draw a substantial amount of power from its battery, usually a lot more than the 25-amp rating for the Hopkins 12-Volt Power Inverter Adapter # HM11147650 that you referenced. For instance, Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Marine Winch # DL25215 draws as much as 70-amps. Bulldog Electric Winch # BDW15020 draws as much as 340-amps at full load. This is why winches should always be wired with a dedicated battery connection using a heavy-gauge winch installation kit...

  • Electric Trailer Winch Recommendation for a 6,000 lb Boat
For boat winches the general rule of thumb is that the ratio for capacity to boat weight is 2 to 1. Since you have a 6,000 lb boat you would want at least a 3,000 lb rated winch. For that I would recommend the Dutton Lainson Strongarm Winch part # DL25215 as it has a 3k rating and would work great for you.

  • Cool Down Time and Max Strap Length for Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch
The ventilation on the Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25215 cannot be improved to increase the run time. The cool down period is 20-30 minutes. The motor uses bushings. The maximum strap length the winch is capable of holding is 25'. You would be better off using something like the Bulldog Winch Trailer Winch # BDW10030 which uses a 50' synthetic rope for this application.

  • How Often to Replace a Winch Strap on a Boat Winch
Typically the only time you will need to replace the strap is when you notice that it is becoming frayed. Typically the first 2 feet of the strap will become frayed first due to sunlight or just the fact that it sees the most movement.

  • Where Should a Dutton-Lainson Strong Arm Winch be Installed on a Boat Trailer
On a boat trailer, you will need to position the Duton-Lainson winch, # DL25215, so that the loading ring on the bow of your boat is the same height or a little higher than the winch drum when the boat is loaded on the trailer. You will need to us a winch stand or other mounting surface that is strong enough to support a load that actually exceeds the capacity of the winch. The instructions, which I have linked for you, actually cover mounting the winch in the first few pages.

  • Boat Trailer Winch Recommendation for an 8,500 lb Boat
Generally when picking out a winch for a boat trailer the ratio is 2 to 1 meaning you would need a winch with roughly half the capacity as the weight of the boat. With good rollers and a short winching distance the ratio increases to 3 to 1, but with long winching distances and wooden bunks like what you currently have the ratio is 1 to 1. Since your boat is very heavy your best option is going to be the Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Marine Winch # DL25215 that has a 9,000 lb capacity...

It's possible that the holes on your Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25215 are slightly off sized/off center by a manufacturing error, or the # DL24055 plate is slightly off, but the fit on the plate should be tight and fully secure the winch. You don't want the winch to move around, so as long as it's secure it should not have any issues.
