I am building a setup to raise and lower an ameteur radio tower. Purchased a winch from a hardware chain store, it looked just like yours and was $25 cheaper. It was rated for 2000lbs, but stripped out at only 200lbs and left my hanging with tower raise only 30 degrees, yes I had a scale on one of the cables. Replaced with your product today, it didn't even strain, even though it is rated for 500 lbs less. Lesson learned. Great product and btw I've had the same winch installed on another tower for years, has worked flawlessly.

by:

Winch is great quality and works for our purpose just fine even though it is seldom actually put to use. Needed a way for grandkids to raise/lower the heavy metal door on our “Turkey Palace”. As they virtually never actually do this, the adults raise and lower it by hand as it’s time consuming with the winches gearing. On the occasions when it is used, it does the job admirably and I would recommend it.

We’ll I’d have to say that the winch hasn’t been used at all after it’s initial trial. Not because of any fault of the winch, simply because no one wanted to take the effort to use this heavy ramp. I have opened it by hand the few times its been opened.

by:

This winch has been a wonderful purchase. I use it with a portable drill, and it has performed beyond expectations. The quality is outstanding.

I have a ham radio antenna on a 30 foot tower. I no longer climb that tower,
so I installed an elevator arrangement on it. I used to handcrank it, and a friend told me about your worm gear crank. Perfect solution for me.

by:

Great product. I used it to create a motorized hard top lift for my Mazda Miata. I just use a cordless drill fitted with a long extension and socket to power the winch. This is perfect because I can remove or replace my hardtop by myself with no assistance and the worm drive winch will hold position by simply stopping the drill. I can make very minute adjustments in height very easily. Way, way better than a pulley system.

by:

This winch works very well, I have had zero issues, don’t hesitate to order from trailer.

by:

Looking for a hand winch for a garage ceiling storage platform? Finally found one here that met my needs. Rep was most helpful redirecting me from what I had chosen to what I was requesting. Cost me a few dollars more but he was correct with his recommendation. Good. He connected me to the OEM for questioning also. Good. Arrived as scheduled. Good. Rep agreed if it didn't meet my satisfaction he'd take it back as long as I'd not affected its resale condition. Fair enough. Read the instructions. Could use a little tweak here or there but understandable and usable. Was unable to determine any winch fabrication and/or design issue of importance. Practiced on using 1/2" drill operation of the winch. I'm keeping it. Now to start the installation.

Your project sounds intriguing and I am so glad that we could help! I would love to see a picture of it in use when all is said and done.

Not your normal use of a worm gear winch, but here it goes. The photo is of a Comet sailboat, built circa 1960. This boat is owned by my older sister, she will be 75 this year, she has lost some strenght in her hands and couldn't get the centerboard up , down is easy with gravity and all, found your product and applied to my problem.

It’s still in the box it looks like it will work great! it is very high-quality!

by:

It is a great winch. We use it to lift firewood about 12 feet with a jib crane on to our deck. It easily and quickly lifts lifts 350 pounds of wood using either a corded or cordless drill. It does not require a ratchet but stays in place when the drill is not attached even under a load. We use Dyneema synthetic line(sailboat rigging) rather than steel cable as it is stronger and easier to work with. It’s a great winch. Nothing but good things to say about it. This is our second season using it and it looks and performs like new. It by far outperformed my expectations.

We are extremely happy with the winch after a year. Using an electric drill it can lift 700 or 800 pounds easily and quickly. It does not need to be locked into place. It holds its position. Everything I wanted in the winch and it’s holding up well. would recommend it to anybody.

by:

It's performance is great. I've had to winch heavy items with ease ( Cabinet Table Saw, Chipper, Tote full of soil (90 gallon)). Used the Electric drill adapter with no problems. The winch is mounted on a Karavan Trailer ([home improvement store])... Made winch cover from a 5 gallon bucket.

The product has performed well. A great help to have.

Well made piece of equipment

by:

Worked well to lift 34' X 18" Laminated Veneer lumber.

by:

I like the worm drives because they cannot unwind unless intentionally done so with the crank. Also, because of the removable crank I can use my drill with a socket to wind and unwind the winch. Works great and I love it.

by:

Purchased as a Christmas gift for my older dad to winch up firewood to the deck level of his home using a battery drill for power. Has been an excellent addition to making life just a bit easier!

by:

Far exceeded my expectations! Really impressed with the heavy frame and construction. I am a heavy equipment tech. by trade. I have used worm gear winches to pull heavy loads. The beauty of a worm gear winch is the anti-reversing effect. I am driving my winch with a cordless drill. I two part my system and pull logs up a hill. At 54 my arms are wearing out. I can't crank a regular style winch all day and or come along. I am every excited about using this unit for a long time. Sorry no photos.

Exceeded expectations

by:

Look, a worm gear winch is slow but powerful!! Don’t know if you know this but the physics of worm gear winches will not allow reversal, (in other words they won’t release unless you release them). I use this winch EVERY day! It’s an animal!! Get one and try it out with a snatch block. You will not be disappointed!!!

Fantastic

by:

This item is exactly what I needed. It is well-made of quality materials, and the finish and fit of the components is excellent. I am using this winch as a replacement on a Genie SL24 Materials lift, so the worm gear design is essential for smooth and precise operation, and a reliable, postive stop.

by:

If I ever buy anything from etrailer again.... I'll have you strapped it to a 3 legged turtle that way I'll get a lot quicker than USPS.... Your Shipping sucks...

by:

This hand winch is awesome. It works perfectly for a DIY bow draw board that I made. The worm gear holds the bow at any position in the draw cycle allowing me to check cam timing, peak draw weight etc. It’s way overkill for this project but I don’t have to be concerned with the winch slipping or breaking.

by:

Just got the winch mounted and cabled up..
Would
prefer the grease for the unit come in a self application pack.. I got the red stuff all over trying to thread the cable onto the drum....
Someone recommend hooking a drill up to the unit to load the cable and that is what I did.. Really helped out.
Will see how it works once I get the load attached to the hook...
well made and look forward to using it for years to come...

The winch worked well for me. We are using it to raise and lower a 40 mirror ball through a chandelier opening when needed. The electric drill makes the installation of the mirror ball real smooth. Very pleased with its performance and not for sure if we could even use the mirror ball in the position it is in without this specific winch.

Received two days earlier than expected.Going to use to install a/c on travel trailer by pulling up homemade ramp.Gotten too old for manual labor. The only muscle that still works[part time] is the one between my ears.

by:

I use this Hex Drive DL Winch to raise and lower my Purple Martin Bird Racks. It's Great because all I have to do is use a 5/8" Socket and Drill to do all the work for me. No lifting, straining or cranking. As a Disabled Vietnam Vet it has made my life much easier - Wish I'd got them years ago!!

Its been a year now since I purchased my Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Winch with Hex Drive. It is a quality product and works impressively to raise and lower my Purple Martin Racks. Using a cordless drill expedites my Nest Check time. And a Worm Gear Winch is the best brake winch you can get when you stop raising or lowering it stops. One of the most efficient and reliable Winches on the market today.!

by:

Great product safe winch

by:

I use my Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Winch with Hex Drive and Fulton Winch Cable to raise and lower my Purple Martin Gourd Racks. They were an excellent choice and I just use a Cordless Drill to do all the work.! My old winches had cranks. They were jerky and hard to crank! These winches are so easy to use, no cranking, no straining, no sweat, they stop when you stop.!! Very Strong, Safe and Reliable Winches that work Great!! Wish I'd got them years ago!

by:

Very easy to install and use, either manually or with a drill. Good solid construction. One DL winch replaced a 40-year old mast-raising electric winch that failed. The other DL winch replaced a rusty hand winch for tilting the mast over that was too difficult to turn. Both new winches make raising and tilting over my ham radio antenna simple. Highly recommended. Good experience with etrailer.

  • Winch to Lift a Slot Car Table Up Vertically
The perfect winch for you is going to be a worm gear winch. They were made with these types of applications in mind. We have some that mount to the ceiling like # DL10954 so you would not have to necessarily use any pulley blocks to get a straight line pull. Worm gear winches brake automatically if you let go of the handle no matter which way you are turning it. The only issue you might run into is that worm gear winches require a lot of handle turns for 1 turn of the drum. But on some...

  • Hand Winch With Top Crank Handle for Loading 5 x 8 Utility Trailer
The only problem I can see with your choice is that worm gear winches take a lot of cranking before anything happens. The crank revolution to drum revolution ratio is 30:1, meaning you'd need to crank the handle 30 times to make the cable drum rotate once. You can lessen the pain by removing the handle and using a heavy duty 1/2 inch drill with a 5/8 inch socket to turn the winch at a less sedate pace. Due to the fact that you're wanting a top crank winch, your choices are pretty limited....

You are on the money with the cable that you need, which is 1/4 inch for the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL11011. The correct cable for this winch is the Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook 1/4" Diameter x 25' Long # DL24100 or 50' Long # DL24104. This is a great winch for what you are looking to do compared to the other winch you mentioned, and I absolutely recommend it because it has an easy-to-use topwind handle which cranks in either direction for lowering and lifting and holds in place...

If you used # DL11011 with a series of pulleys you could mount the winch lower and operate it with a power drill to speed things up significantly.
