Video Transcript for Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch DL24104 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number DL24104. This is the Dutton-Lainson hand-winch cable with a safety hook. The cable itself is going to give us a 1/4" diameter. It's going to measure 50 feet long. It's going to have the forged steel hook on this end with the safety latch mechanism that is spring loaded. It's going to prevent accidental disconnecting or unhooking. This is a flexible 7 x 9 galvanized aircraft cable.

It is going to be suitable on Dutton-Lainson Hand Winches, up to a 3,500 pound capacity. It will work for StrongArm electric winches up to 3,000 pounds. It's going to have the safe working load limit for other applications of 1,400 pounds. Nice construction, very strong, and very durable. You can see here where the steel hook swivels around the cable.

Dutton-Lainson puts a nice steel plate in there. That's just going to prevent the cable from wearing or fraying. It's going to extend the life of the cable itself. Here on this end, you have the exposed cable end. This is going to be the end that gets anchored to the winch.

That's going to do it for our review of part number DL24104. This is the Dutton-Lainson hand winch cable with a safety hook. Again, you're going to have 50 feet in length. The cable diameter is 1/4". .

Hand winch cable with safety hook.

It is a great item pulling a race car into the trailer. Its holding up well and doing what it supposed too.

I installed this on my Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch P/N DL11001. Both are in my 20 foot enclosed trailer in case I have to pull in a vehicle that won't run. The winch cable worked perfectly when I pulled my 3000lb tractor into the trailer as a test. I am pleased with this purchase. Jameson assisted me in picking out this product.

I love it George - very well made - I sprayed the cable I got with it - with lithium grease and after being outdoors for most of the year on my trailer it looks like new still! The worm gear set up with my high speed Milwaukee Fuel hammer drill (great torque - pro drill) works great.I use it to haul a small drift boat up and down steep inclines (drift boat for rivers - fishing) and it works well. I also added corrosion X grease to all of the winch's moving parts - New England weather is a good test for it.

Hand winch is strong, larger than expected, and built pretty heavy duty. One thing to note, the pawl (clicker) is only one sided, so it won't hold the load when letting cable out. It would be nice if it had an extra little tab to allow cranking in, cranking out, and neutral (line pull out) positions.

Also, I'm new to winches, but kind of wish it had a clutch on the cable to keep tension on the cable spool. When nothing is on the line, the tension on the spool unravels, causing the cable go all over the place, the first time i used it, I slightly pinched the cable (I had half the line payed out, and the slack on that part got bunched up when I started pulling in)

I went with a cable instead of strap so that I could use a snatch block pulley if i ever needed extra power, and also ordered a cable twice as long as what I needed to allow for looping back (using it on a utility/car trailer)

Looking back I should have went with the shorter cable so that the line would be all the way out when starting to winch. I might cut down the cable to a shorter length and eventually replace it with a strap. Another drawback i found with the cable is that it tends to wander all over the drum back over itself if you aren't careful causing a tangled mess, but I guess that happens on the power winches too.

Another accessory I wish they had was a heavy waterproof drawstring bag to slip over the winch when not in use. I made a removable pedestal using 2" receiver tube, so I plan to keep the winch indoors. but I really should grease up the cable and it would be nice to have a cover. (Might try to make a bag or have one made)

Overall I'm satisfied and the winch itself more than met my expectations. I was able to easily pull a 2003 Grand cherokee up the ramps onto my trailer with one hand and single line.

This winch has a lot of power, very smooth operation. It works great with my 1/2in battery powered drill. cable always winds perfect and tangle free. I use it to pull my 16ft jon boat out of the water on a makeshift ramp. the boat and motor is around 1000 lbs. its a very high quality winch and its made in the USA.

Everything arrived in nice big box, packed well. Looks like perfect replacement parts. Fast ship time.

So far the cables are fine and I had enough to fit both winches for our application.

by:

eTrailer is awesome. I ordered this product to place a Superwinch Terra cable and rolled on no problem.

by:

Was not easy to install properly - but now does the job.
When the trailer is parked outside cover it up so its not getting rained on - that will extent the life of that cable...

by:

Excellent. I probably could have used a much smaller cable, but it should handle any load I might have in the future.

by:

The product was exactly what I ordered, but the service was really great and the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. My purchase arrived a couple days early and the invoice arrived on the day of purchase. I work with many many companies and yours for service is one of the best. Thanks for your help in obtaining this cable. Ken

  • Availability of Winch To Use With 1/4-Inch Wire Cable
If you need to have a winch that uses a wire cable I do offer the Dutton-Lainson 1,400-Lb Winch, part # DL15303. This winch will accept either a 1/4-inch wire cable or a 2-inch wide strap. It will hold up to 40 feet of 1/4-inch cable or 31 feet of 2-inch wide strap. The part number for the cable would be # DL24104 and for the strap would be # DL24260.

  • Ceiling Mount System for Creating Bed Lift
Using the Tow-Rax L-Track # TWSP18DTAB is an interesting idea, though I cannot recommend using any type of track system on your ceiling to use as anchors as they are not designed for that. What that means is they are not tested for use on ceilings and don't have a weight capacity so I can't guarantee this would work, or even be safe. The best option we can provide is a winch, the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - Ceiling Mount # DL10954 with Hand Winch Cable # DL24104. I have provided a dimensional...

  • Recommended Dutton-Lainson Freewheeling Brake Winch 1500 lbs. # DL14996
I have a recommendation for you, but unfortunately we do not have a Worm-Gear Hand Winch that has a free wheel option. The closest winch we offer to fit your needs is the Dutton-Lainson Freewheeling Brake Winch with TuffPlate Finish # DL14996. This winch is self locking, has a weight capacity of 1,500 lbs. and has a free wheel option. The handle sits on the side and is not reversible. It does need at least 75 lbs. for this winch to operate properly and the handle is included with this...

  • Mounting Dimensions for the Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch # DL14881
I went out to our warehouse and measured the mounting base for the Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch, item # DL14881. The flat part of the base measures 8-3/8 inches long by 5 inches wide. The elongated bolt hole at one end of the winch is 1-7/8 inches long and the 4 elongated holes at the other end are 1 inch long. The two round holes are 3/8 inch diameter. The distance on center between the long elongated hole and the first set of shorter elongated holes is 4-1/8 inches. The distance between...

  • Recommended Worm Gear Winch for Tilting 2000-lb Well House
While the 1.8K-rated Dutton Lainson winch # DL15502 has enough capacity for tilting your well house, in your particular application of using a winch to raise one side of a 2000-lb well house to allow servicing I recommend a worm gear winch for the most safety. Worm gear winches CANNOT reverse the direction of pull, meaning that the person working underneath that well house will have the peace of mind of knowing they will get to wake up in the morning. Dutton-Lainson winch # DL11001 has...

  • Winch Recommendation to Use as Hoist for Lifting Sign into Air
The only style of winch we offer that can be used to hoist something safely into the air is a worm gear winch like the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - Worm Gear - Loop Drive - Ceiling Mount # DL10954 that was actually designed to mount on the ceiling and hoist something into the air like you mentioned wanting to do. I attached a picture of two of these mounted on a ceiling for you to check out as well. For a cable then you'd want the part # DL24104.

  • Winch Recommendation for Ceiling Hoist with Automatic Brake
For that application you will want a worm gear winch like the Dutton Lainson Ceiling Mount part # DL10954 this is the best and safest winch we offer that you can use as a ceiling hoist that automatically applies a "brake" when you stop cranking the winch. I attached a review video for this for you to check out as well. For a cable then you'd want the part # DL24104.

  • Upgraded Winch Recommendation With Same Mounting Dimensions As Current Winch
The closest I can come to the same mounting holes you have for your DL1402A winch is part # DL14527. This is a 1,600-lb pulling winch and it has very similar mounting hole locations. I have attached dimensional drawings for the DL1402A and the # DL14527 winch you can check out. The mounting holes are nearly identical and I am sure the # DL14527 will work great for you. This winch does not come with the cable. For a cable I recommend part # DL24104. If you prefer a strap for the winch...

  • Recommended Hand Winch for Low-Weight Lifting of Outdoor Grill
The best type of winch for your application is a worm gear winch like the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch with Hex Drive # DL11001. I recommend this over a brake winch because it does not have a minimum load requirement, it allows you the option to use a power drill to operate it if you like, and it needs no mechanism to stop gear movement. With a worm gear winch unless you are cranking the handle (or using a drill) the winch simply cannot rotate. This is the best type of safety feature...

  • Recommendation for a Winch to Load a Harley Davidson Motorcycle into a Cargo Trailer
You would need to consult a qualified welder to have a mount fabricated that will allow you rotate the handle 360 degrees on a hand winch. We do not stock any bolt on parts that are heavy enough to be used to mount a winch safely in this case, and you would need to tie the mount into the trailer frame for stability. We have a Universal Hand Winch Right Angle Mounting Bracket, item # DL24110, which would make the fabrication of the raised mount easier. An option I would look at, would be...

  • Winch for Lifting and Suspending 2,000 lb Load
The Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch # DL24962 is designed for straight pulling and not really vertical pulling. Even if you were to mount it on a wall so the vertical pull would technically be a straight pull the winch wouldn't be able to suspend a load. Instead you need a winch that is designed to suspend a heavy load like that. For your application you need a worm gear hand winch. These operate much slower and are hand cranks (although you can connect a power drill) but they...

  • Winch Recommendation for Lifting 900 lbs 20 Feet High
A winch that you could consider using is the Dutton-Lainson Brake Winch, # DL14964, which would allow you to lift the 900 lb load 20 feet, with the 50 foot hand winch cable, # DL24104. This winch has the advantage of less moving parts and is a bit more economical. The drawbacks to this winch are that the winch will be harder to crank and there are not two speeds to select from. If you are lifting from the floor to an elevated position you could also use a block and tackle setup. The force...

  • Can Smaller Diameter But Longer Cable be Used with Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch
Since the max cable capacity of the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14825 is 5/16" x 47' you can definitely use the 1/4" x 50' Cable # DL24104 but you may have to cut off some of the length for it to fit properly on the winch (as it is 3' longer than the recommended size cable). Please note that the winch has a max weight rating of 2,500 lbs so even though this cable is rated for 3,500 lbs since the winch has a lower rating that is what you are limited by.

  • Can Synthetic Wire Rope be Used with Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch
I spoke with my contact at Dutton-Lainson regarding the 2-Speed Hand Winch # DL14881 that you referenced. She stated that they do not recommend using synthetic wire rope with any of their winches. This is because of how synthetic rope will get tighter as it stretches, which over time can actually cause damage to the winch drum. • Recommended Tree Mounted Winch to Pull 3000 Pound Boat Up Slope on Log Rollers
We do not offer any tree mount winches and a tree is not a recommended place to mount a standard hand winch. Normally in these situations, people mount a hand winch on a steel post held in the ground with concrete in order to support the weight. You'll need to make sure the winch pays out and reels in a straight line into the winch so it may need to be angled. When winching a boat onto a boat trailer a common ratio for determining your winch load capacity is 2 to 1. For example, a 5,000...
