Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The leaf springs provide the attachment points for your trailer's axle, suspending it from the frame of your trailer. Each spring flexes to absorb road shock as you travel, allowing the axle to move somewhat independently of the rest of your trailer. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the trailer and also ensures a smooth ride.

Double-eye leaf springs attach to hangers that are welded onto your trailer. One end of this spring will attach directly to the hanger with a suspension bolt. The other end will attach to shackle straps that are suspended from a hanger. These straps allow the spring to move and pivot so that it can better compensate for uneven pavement. If you have a tandem- or triple-axle trailer, the shackle straps will be attached to the equalizer that connects multiple springs.

To mount this spring, you will need hangers, shackle straps, and suspension bolts. If you are simply replacing a spring, you may still have hangers welded onto your trailer. You should, however, replace your shackle straps because they are usually the first component to wear out. You may choose to replace old suspension bolts as well. It is recommended that you replace the other leaf spring in your setup at the same time. Because springs can sag and elongate as they wear, this new spring may not exactly match the old one, and the alignment of your trailer could be affected.

If you are fabricating a trailer, you will need to purchase a hanger kit for installation. To determine the type of hanger kit that you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring that you have, as well as your axle capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications. Hangers and other suspension components can also be purchased separately if there isn't a complete kit that works for your setup.

  • Troubleshooting Broken Leaf Spring On a Boat Trailer With Tandem Axles Mounted Individually
I recommend any trailer with a tandem axle setup use an equalizer regardless of the amount of leaves in the spring or if it is a double eye or slipper spring design. On a system like your trailer where each axle is mounted individually and not connected one axle will carry more of its share of the weight when one axle lowers due to road angles or unlevel trailer positioning. An equalizer setup like the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit # APT3 will allow the suspension to continue to spread...

I went ahead and attached a diagram that shows the spacing of the hangers on the 6-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Hook End for 8,000-lb Trailer Axles - 29-1/2" Long # e46SR. This is the spacing you will use with the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for 2" Slipper Springs - 12" Long Equalizers # APT6SE.

  • How to Pick Leaf Springs for a Trailer
If you look on the frame of your trailer there should be a plate with the trailer VIN number and the axle capacities of the trailer. You will want to pick leaf springs that are as close to the axle capacity as possible. You will want to also measure the distance from eye to eye of your old leaf springs and then pick a leaf spring with the same weight capacity of your trailer axles and is slightly shorter (around 1 inch) to compensate for the sag and wear of the old leaf spring. • Is There Potential Problems by Placing Shackle Straps in Front of Axle Instead of Rear Axle
As long as your shackle straps are not elongated, bent or rusted you can place them in front of your axle. It's always a good idea to check shackle straps frequently because they are the part that will wear the most. If you need to replace, you will measure the shackle from center of one eye to the center of the other eye. I included a helpful article and video review for you too.

  • Trailer Suspension Hanger Spacing When Using Spring e46SR on 6,000 Pound Axles
The hanger spacing depends on the number of axles and some other factors including the hanger kit that is used. On a single axle trailer using kit # APS1 the center to center distance from the front to rear hanger is 24-7/8 inches. On a tandem axle set up the center to center distance from the front to center hanger and from the center to rear hanger is 29-1/2 inches. On a triple axle set up the distance from the front to the second hanger is 29-1/2 inches, from the second to third hangers...

  • 25-1/4 inch Leaf Spring Recommendation for Travel Trailer with Tandem Axles
20 year old leaf springs on a trailer could easily stretch 3/4 of an inch. Going with a 25-1/4 inch spring like you mentioned would be great. Since your springs are 3 inch in diameter that would indicate that most likely you have a 5,200 lb axle as that's a very common rating for that size. For a 25-1/4 inch length spring we have the part # e44SR which has a 5,000 lb capacity. # e57SR which has a 4,000 lb capacity, and # e46SR which has a 6,000 lb capacity. Suspension components can be...

On the EZ Flex the distance from the center of the mounting hole to the center line between the 2 bottom holes, straight up and down, is 2-7/8 inches. If your 4-3/4 inch measurement is diagonal then you will be good to go with this kit. For a u-bolt kit you can use # APUBR-9. The shocks might actually feel more effective with the EZ Flex kit installed....

If you need a higher capacity then you will need to upgrade the hangers and equalizers to accept 2" with a kit like the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for 2" Slipper Springs part # APT6SE so you can use the 6-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Hook End for 8,000-lb part # e46SR.

The B dimension on a slipper spring is the distance that should be between the hanger and the mounting point on a slipper spring equalizer. For example the part # e46SR that you referenced should have a distance of 24-7/8 inches between the first hanger and the equalizer mounting point. Since equalizers can have different lengths there isn't a standard dimension with this spring. Let's use hanger kit part # AP202-H238 as an example. The first hanger of the hanger kit part # AP202-H238...

  • Slipper Spring and Tandem Axle Hanger Kit Recommendation for a 14k Trailer
Both slipper springs and double eye springs will work just as well as the other as long as they are rated for the weight of the trailer. Typically slipper springs are seen more on the heavier capacity trailers. For an 8k axle rated spring you really only have the option of slipper springs. You would want the # e46SR like you referenced. For a tandem axle hanger kit for use with this spring you would then want the part # AP216-H238.

  • Is There Any Advantage In Using a Single Leaf Spring Instead of a Stacked Leaf Spring
The only advantage you might get from using the 1-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long # e46SR instead of a handful stacked together, like the 5-Leaf # e34SR, is if you're needing to lower the height of your trailer. • Will Changing Leaf Springs Help Unloaded Ride Quality of a Trailer
The problem is that in order for the trailer to have the overall capacity it needs to carry what the trailer is rated for it needs to have a very stiff spring. The trade-off is that when the trailer is loaded the springs are working fine, but when the trailer is unloaded it can be pretty annoying. If you were to go with a spring that is light enough so that the trailer would not bounce around as much the trailer would also no longer have the capacity it once did. So basically you have...

As long as the 29-1/2" length of the 6-Leaf Slipper Spring # e46SR you were looking at matches the current slipper springs used with your 7000lb axles then yes, they will work. You can confirm the length of your current slipper springs by jacking the trailer up so that there is not weight on the springs and measuring from center of spring eye to the end of the slipper spring as shown in the included picture. With that said this spring will be slightly stiffer than your current springs...

  • 6k Rated Double Eye Leaf Spring Recommendation for Trailer
The most common leaf spring length for trailer is 25-1/4 inches. The best recommendation I can make is the part # e46SR which is 25-1/4 inches long and is for 6k rated axles. You may need to move the hangers on your trailer to get these to fit, but you should note that trailer leaf springs have a tendency to stretch around 3/4 of an inch over time.
