Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Over-the-Hub Rotor

Kodiak's slip-on, stainless steel rotor makes it easy to convert an idler axle to a disc brake axle. Simply place the rotor over your hub. It is most often wheel bolt piloted for a loose fit and then held in place by the wheel itself. With a separate rotor and hub, you can easily repair or replace one element of your brake system without having to junk the whole thing.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of stainless steel to prevent flexing and rust. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 5-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant stainless steel that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

If you want trouble free brakes in a marine environment this is the only way to go. I have them on another trailer of mine for 10 years and no issues. Quinn was great to work with doing a sanity check on my selection to make sure I was ordering the right parts. Half of the order got missing within the UPS system, not etrailer's fault but several people worked well with me to get me a replacement set of parts. Was able to get concerned and knowledgeable help on the phone quicky in the several call I made. Amazing, they all speak English!!! Everyone can be great to deal with when there are no hiccups. The real test is to see how people deal with adversity and etrailer was great.

Seeing how quickly high end boat trailers rusted out from salt water when I was a kid in the 1960s, I built a trailer for myself using heavily galvanized junk yard steel and took the springs apart, slathering each leaf with a very viscous grease. This trailer lasted for over twenty years of salt water use. My current triple axle aluminum trailer has needed new hubs, calipers and rotors about every 4 years due to corrosion even with good flushing after each use, so I ordered Kodiak SS 12" rotors, SS calipers and SS caliper mounting flanges. On previous brakes the actual brake pad material had been separating from their metal backing plates after maybe 4 years due to corrosion, so I was very pleased to test the new brake pads and find the pad material is bonded to what seems to be SS backing plates!! The kit however, did not comes with SS bolts to attach the caliper mounting flanges to the wheel bearing hub mounting flanges. Finding 1.25' long by 3/8" diameter SS bolts and SS nylock nuts was a time consuming nuisance so I suggest including them with the Kodiak kits. I have 12 trailers and tow a couple of boats including a 32' twin 300 hp boat rig between the Florida Keys and Chesapeake Bay seasonally and the conversion from surge brakes to electric over hydraulic using a progressive brake controller has been a MAJOR safety improvement.

No signs of corrosion - good. Even though I am a tight wad, I just bought and installed a second set of Kodiak SS brakes on another trailer axle. The disc brake pad backing plates on this set are SS which is a big deal

Perfect fit and great price! Service from Etrailer was great, they even processed a price match for me a few weeks after delivery of my order. The service has been fantastic and I’m very pleased with the quality of these Kodiak Stainless Steel Brakes, Rotors and Hubs for my boat trailer after removing old leaf springs and upgrading to torsion axels. I’m also eliminating the surge brake actuator and going to electric over hydraulic for better performance and braking power and replacing all brake lines with Kodiak brake lines. I’ve included some before and after pics of the install for reference.

Great product and outstanding customer service. Our trailer was down in the peak of our fishing season, and Paula was excellent at assisting us in getting this product overnighted. She checked the warehouse status to make sure we would get the product on time. It is so nice to receive that level of customer attention, thank you!!

by:

Retrofit on my ez loader trailer using these and ez loader oil hubs. Everything fit great and looks awesome. Went from intergel rotors to these. The customer support was great, ordered in between tornado warnings, they call right back.

by:

Perfect fit, delivered as promised.

Kodiak brakes are great. I paid for the high quality stainless steel brakes and wheel assemblies that were well worth it. It’s been a year of use and several road trips with salt water boat launches on the ramps. So far all is well with a end of year service to ensure a good next season. I use Timkin bearings as well.
Cheers to Kodiak for the build for the product and etrailer for the discounted price supply.
etrailer is a wealth of talent with good knowledge on the products I have purchased so far for my trailer renovations.
Thanks to them

Well after about a year on the the boat trailer all is well. It gets used on long and short trips and dunked in salt water. I’ve had it serviced to see how it looks inside and due to the fact that the Kodak hub is stainless steel there’s been no rust show up to destroy the bearings or damage the shaft spindle either. I’d recommend it to have a longer life system. BTW I have two braked axels that are all Kodiak brake and wheel components on them. In addition I chose to put electric over hydraulic on the trailer and I’m also happy with that too.

by:

I upgraded my trailer's totally rusted out (after only two years) brakes with this kit. It's now 8 years later and they still look and work like new.

If you use your trailer in salt water then these should be put on when new!

by:

Greg S and ALL the etrailer staff is top-notch.
The
product is awesome, fitment is perfect...I really wish the kit would have come with twelve new stainless bolts and lock washers for the brackets but it didn’t.

by:

Really expensive solution for my boat trailer that gets dunked in saltwater alot. Will see how well it holds up over time but everything fits and works well so far

by:

Big upgrade to my non stainless breaks before! My only complaint is I did have to run to the hardware store and grab 10 3/8”x1” bolts and nuts. The install takes a few hours and 2 people to bleed the breaks.

by:

You folks are great at Etrailer. Keep up the great work. Good products at fair products, with great service.

by:

Cathy helped me find the right brake parts for my trailer. She got it shipped to me on time and delivered when I needed it most, right before an out of town trip. She is extremely personable and is an awesome example of what customer service should be. I hope her boss reads this and gives her a nice big bonus !!!! She deserves it.

by:

Brakes seem heavy-duty & solid; they are cast with only some surfaces machined, so the product has a bit of a rough look, but I don't expect that to affect function

by:

A little more money than aftermarket but well worth the money

by:

Very well made products.;4

Very Happy and they were delivered fast!

  • Items Needed to Convert Trailer to EOH Disc Brake Operation
The 6K-rated disc brakes we have are shown on the linked page. All use the 6-on-5-1/2 bolt pattern and we have both rotor-only or hub-with-rotor type kits. You also have choices in the type of material/finish used for construction. We have higher-end full-stainless-steel kits like # K2R526S as well as more cost-effective e-coat kits. We do not have any stainless rotors that will fit with the UFP calipers you have now.
