Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

very nice .handled well. I didn't like the position of the mount box ... I thought it should be on both sides. For me, since I created a custom trailer for a dinghy. The mounts when installed properly, sat to low. So, it worked for on the reverse but that meant the cam was reverse.

by:

Great product. Excellent customer service. Fast shipping. Good price. What more could you ask for.

by:

Haven’t put it on but it’s longer overall but shorter spring center so it will be tricky to get it done correctly and so that it is angled or crooked.

  • Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System in Place of Custom Axle
While you may be able to have an axle custom-fabricated with those dimensions the best option is going to be an axle-less suspension system, the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System # ASR3500S05. With these you will not need an axle with any particular length because the Timbrens are a bolt-on installation that you attach to the side of the frame. Suspension System # ASR3500S05 is rated for 3,500 lbs and has straight spindles that work with hubs # 84545UC1-EZ. The Timbrens are...

  • Replacement 60-Inch 3500-lb Dexter Axle with 5-on-5-1/2-Inch Bolt Pattern
We do offer 60-inch replacement trailer axles from Dexter and both can be seen on the link provided. Note that both of these are rated for 2000-lbs. The 5-on-5-1/2-inch hub you referenced, part # 84555UC1, is intended for 3500-lb axles. The most important measurements for selecting a replacement axle are the hub face-to-hub face measurement (taken with the hubs in place) and the spring center-to-spring-center distance. Please refer to the linked photo. For example, Dexter Trailer Axle...

  • How to Determine Correct Replacement Axle and Leaf Springs
We can give it a shot! First, for the correct replacement axle for your trailer you will need to know the dimensions of your current axle's hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center; the other thing you need to know is the weight capacity of the axle you need, which should match or exceed the GVWR of your trailer. For example, the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam # T20BTR-6048 has a 2,000 lb capacity and measures 60 inches from hub face to hub face and 48 inches from spring center...

  • Can Trailer Spindle be Bent Back In Place
If a spindle is bent you cannot bend it back in place. Replacing the axle would be the best route. You are going to need to measure your current axles in a few places to get the correct one as we don't have access to what your numbers reference. You will need to measure from hub face to hub face and then from the spring seat centers. You will also need to know what bolt pattern you have on your current hubs. I attached a help article on how to determine this as well. I also attached...

  • How to Determine Correct Length of New Trailer Axle
I do have an idea of how to determine the correct length of axle you need for your trailer, and it will be based off of a pretty easy measurement you need to take. To get the right replacement axle you will need to know the dimensions of your current axle's hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center as in the diagram I have added. For example the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with Standard Spindles # T20BTR-6048 has a 2,000 lb capacity and measures 60 inches from hub face to hub...

  • Adding a Brake Axle to a 48 Inch Wide Home Made Travel Trailer on Harbor Freight Frame
What you could do is use an axleless system # A35RS545E which comes with everything except a brake controller. The only issue is that you would need to also replace the tires and wheels with something like # TA73RR since the kit has a 5 bolt pattern and your trailer has a 4 on 4 pattern. We don't have a straight axle with the proper spring hanger spacing for the trailer. But you could potentially use # T20BTR-6048 and have a professional welded cut off the spring seats and weld on new...

The best we can do to make sure it wears well with all the salt water is to instead use the same Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with Standard Spindles - 60" Long - 2,000 lbs # T20BTR-6048 but change out the assemblies. • Replacement Axle Needed for a 4' x 8' Trailer

If your wheels have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, you can use the Dexter Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs # 20440I-ST-60. It sounds like you are looking for a 61" replacement axle for your utility trailer. Although we do not have any axles that are 61" long when measured from hub face to hub face, we do have 60" axles available. All of these axles have a 1-3/4" diameter which is typical for a 2,000 lb axle, and measure 48" spring seat to spring seat.
