Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

2010 Dodge Ram Pickup

Purchased the Tekonsa Primus IQ controller with wiring adapter for my Dodge Ram. Shipment arrived quickly and was exactly what I needed. Installation was a piece of cake. Cut an opening in the plastic stock dash location. Plugged the adapter into the Dodge plug under the dash and into the Primus. Worked perfectly. No fuss. Installed in about 10 minutes which included the time to cut the opening.. Picture will be poster...
I was so happy with the service from etrailers that I ordered the Blue Ox Swaypro hitch. Thanks ETrailer.com!

Working great! No issues.

I'm sure the product is great, but it does not work with my truck at all. Everything connects, all fuses are good but it receives no power. I had better luck with a cheap one from Amazon prior to this expensive one.

by:

Bought a Tekonsha P3 Trailer brake controller for my RAM 3500 HD when the OEM unit failed. A bit of work is needed to mount it but was well worth the price and effort to install. Simple to set up and adjust as the new brakes wore in. Braking with my 9750 pounds 5th wheel is now superb. The picture shows the final assembly just before popping the unit into the spot where the original unit was installed. My advice is: forget the factory unit, just buy one of these and enjoy your towing experience.

by:

Everything arrived on time and as advertised. Installation went without a hitch. The imbedded controller was removed without a problem and the wiring adapter worked as advertised. The EVIC does display an error but is easily corrected by depressing the back button before shifting into gear, Another good experience with etrailer!

Very easy conversion from factory unit. Slightly trimmed the factory dash where the OEM unit was located. New conversion plug was a perfect match. I highly recommend this unit over the expensive factory replacement

Received the trailer brake for my pick up. 2 Days early!
Thank you!

Dodge Ram Pickup

Bought this to temporarily install my prodigy controller until I got a factory controller for my ram. This harness was so easy to install (2 minutes) and works so good I think I am going to just keep this setup and save the $200 for controller and $50 to get the EVIC programmed. For $15 you can't go wrong!

by:

it works as it should but now i am getting a light on my truck that says service trailer brake system. i hate check engine lights. i didnt know by not using the factory electric brake system it would throw a code but the main thing is that my trailer brakes work. it was very easy to install and so far so good

You will probably have to visit a Ram dealer to have them reconfigure the TIPM system so that you can get rid of the code. Check out the FAQ article that I have attached about using an aftermarket brake controller on a 2010 and up Ram trucks with integrated controllers:

2012 Ram 1500

Great product, plugged right in and made the installation a piece of cake!
The controller I bought was the P2, after a bit of cutting it went right in the hole where I believe the optional factory controller would have been.
I did cut a bit further down than I should have.

by:

Didn't us the one I bought already one hidden under the dash

2015 Dodge Ram Pickup

I bought this controller with the adapter harness to fit my 2012 Ram. I installed it in the location the factory controller would go into in about 15 minutes. Plugged right in and worked great. I couldn't be happier with it.

by:

Your website sold me on whether to purchase from etrailer. Other sites did not show or describe the products to assure me that the product would fit my needs and my vehicle. Even my local trailer supply store was no help and cost was more.

Controller did not seem to be working at first but after some use, it was fine. I had new brakes and drums and I think they just had to self adjust with use use.

Don’t pay for two day shipping. The product and service were great the shipping was not timely.

Quick shipment worked great saved a lot of time instead of splicing wires under a dashboard just plug in both ends & your done. when you are changing your brake controller from a Ford f 150 to a Dodge Ram its the way to go.

Very fast shipping. Brake controller was very easy to install with the factory harness adaptor. Seems to work great, very happy.

Works great still. Just be aware that steep driveways throw off the sensor and sometimes lock up the trailer brakes. Very easy and reliable on the road.

by:

Hey it's just a wiring connector, but it has to be the right one for your vehicle and device. Mine was and saved a lot of work under the dash for just a little money. Take a close look or photo of your socket and make sure you are ordering the correct configuration. They may change designs from one year to the next. Zoom in on the product description pictures and insure it is a match for your truck.

2012 Dodge Ram Pickup

Purchased this product, along with the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 brake controller, to replace an OEM brake controller in my 2012 Ram 3500 which was a timed unit, as contrasted with the P3's proportional braking action. This adapter fit the OEM plug perfectly, and braking function is now, at least in my opinion, greatly improved on all my trailers. Thanks, Tekonsha and eTrailer!
(There was a minor aggravation which had nothing to do with the eTrailer parts; with the OEM unit unplugged and out of the system, the onboard computer turned on a red light on the dash, and an occasional message to "service the trailer brake system". Dealer techs tell me they can't turn it off, and I've gotten used to it. Just a FYI for any one who embarks on the same path as I did - it will either save you time at the dealer, or expose you to more knowledgeable dealer techs than I had....) JM

2015 Dodge Ram Pickup

This quality cable is exactly what is required to connect a non factory electronic brake control to a 2015 Ram 1500 factory trailer brake wiring harness. (Note - you can unplug the factory RAM Trailer brake control and the truck will not complain. I had to use specialized brake control for a towed vehicle brake system which is why the Ram factory control had to be disconnected.)

by:

Good information and super fast delivery. Thank you

by:

Very pleased with products and very simple products, do wish that the pollock wiring would come with code diagram

  • Trailer Brakes Work With Brake Controller But Not With Brake Pedal On A 2010 Dodge Ram 3500
On your 2010 Dodge 3500 I would use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and probe the red wire on the back of your Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885. When you step on the brake, the red wire should show a signal. If it does not, that means the controller is not receiving a signal from the brake pedal. If you hardwired the controller, check the red wire connection to be sure it is attached to the correct wire on the brake switch above the brake pedal. You need the wire...

The best way to resolve the issue is to bypass the Dodge controller and use one that is compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes.
