Wiring Harness and Hitch Receiver Recommendation for 2006 Dodge Ram 1500
Question:
my ram is wired four flat. I have no hitch but plan on putting one in soon. I plan on towing a travel trailer under 4000 lbs total weight. uhaul installs hitches that are 6000 lbs. that will serve my purpose. For that year dodge only installs a 12000 hitch. Your thoughts? Also, should I go to a 7 wire round plug? Thank you.

In order to get your 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup ready to tow your travel trailer we will start with a hitch receiver. I recommend going with the Curt Class III Receiver Hitch, # 13333. This hitch has a 6,000 pound towing capacity and does not require any drilling for installation.
For a ball mount for your hitch, check out kit # EBMK4. This kit works with the Class III hitch and includes ball mount, 1-7/8" ball, 2" ball, pin, clip, and a bag to store it all.
Although installing a hitch with a higher capacity would be perfectly acceptable, a hitch with a 12,000 pound capacity would be a bit of overkill for what you are planning to tow.
Now for your wiring. I am going to assume that the travel trailer that you plan to tow has a 7-way connector and is equipped with brakes. You mention that you currently have a 4-way installed on your truck so in order to tow your travel trailer you will need to install our Universal Installation Kit, # ETBC7, which includes everything you need to install an electric trailer brake controller and 7-way connector.
Last but not least, a brake controller. The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller, # 90195, activates immediately and in proportion to your pickup's braking action. This controller is very easy to mount due to it's automatic leveling ability.
I have included a few short videos for you to take a look at.
