Recommendation of a Hitch Extender for Motor Home to Flat Tow a Jeep Wrangler
Question:
I NEED TO PUT A 6inch HITCH EXTENSION ON MY RECIEVER HITCH TO PULL MY JEEP WRANGLER, 4-DOWN, BEHIND MY MOTOR HOME. THE JEEP WEIGHT IS 4300 POUNDS, THE HITCH ON THE MOTOR HOME IS RATED AT 7000 POUNDS, BUT I KEEP READING THAT ADDING AN EXTENSION REDUCES THE HITCH RATING BY 50. IS THAT REDUCTION FOR TRAILER TOWING ONLY REGARDING THE TOUNGE WEIGHT ON THE HITCH, OR DOES IT ALSO INCLUDE THE FLAT TOWING OF A VEHICLE BEHIND A MOTOR HOME WITH NO NOTICABLE TOUNGE WEIGHT?...IM LOOKING AT THE BLU-OX 6inch EXTENSION, OR THE E-TRAILER 7inch EXTENSION.

Expert Reply:
The Blue Ox hitch extender # BX88265 (10,000 pound towing capacity) and Roadmaster trailer hitch extension # RM-071-75 (6000 pound towing capacity) will be capable of flat-towing your Jeep Wrangler weighing 4300 pounds. Adding a hitch extension to flat-tow a vehicle will not decrease the rated towing capacity on the hitch extender. There isn't as much stress on the tongue.
For traditional towing the towing capacity will reduce by 50 percent by adding a hitch extender.
Also, these two hitches were specifically designed for flat-towing.
I have linked a couple installation videos as well as a FAQ regarding hitch adapter/extenders.
