Best Weight Distribution for 2014 Ram 2500 and Trailer with 1,322 Pound Tongue Weight

Question:

I have a 2014 Work an Play 30WLA. Pulling it with a 2014 Ram 2500. As per the Manufactures web site. The Hitch weight is 1322#. With a GVWR of 13,322#. I am not sure how to determine the correct Hitch. The one I have now is rated at 800# After pulling for 600 miles I am positive that it is not enough.

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

An 800 pound system is rated much too low for a tongue weight at 1,322 pounds. You will want a system that is rated for 800 to 1,500 pounds such as # RP66130 that you have referenced. This system also comes with dual-cam sway control to help prevent trailer sway.

This system does not include a shank. You will need to choose a shank based the amount of rise or drop needed to tow the trailer level. I have linked a help article to the right that explains how to measure for rise or drop. Then you can use the other link to find a shank that is the closest match to the rise or drop needed.

And you will also need a properly sized ball. Most likely you will need a 2-5/16 inch ball so you can use # C40030. I have included a couple of links to the right on weight distribution, sway control, and determining tongue weight for you as well.
