To help troubleshoot your brake controller, I have attached a helpful article that explains some of the common problems that can occur with a brake controller along with some methods that can be used to correct them.

I recommend using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. For a hard wire installation, you will want to test each of the wires and make certain they are installed properly. Any connections that are not secured properly can cause a number of problems. It is equally important that the ground is attached to a clean metal surface as well.

If you have a wiring adapter that simply plugs in to your truck wiring, you can use the circuit tester and check all of the pins on the connector. One pin should show power all the time, one should show power only when the brake pedal is pressed, and at least 2 other pins that show no power present. If all of the wiring checks out, you may need to replace the controller.

If you want to let me know what kind of truck and brake controller you have, I can make some recommendations like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885, if you find you need to replace your controller.

I have attached links to some helpful articles about brake controllers you can check out.
