How to Maintain Trailer Level With Weight Distribution System Installed

Question:

We have a 17inch ultra light single axle trailer weighing approximately 3500lbs that we pull behind a Ford Explorer. We have a weight distribution system with sway control arm. However, the Explorers hitch receiver is too high, even with the weight distribution system adjusted to its lowest level. The trailer does not sit flat but angles to the rear leaving little clearance at the rear of the trailer. Do you have a hitch receiver that can be used in such an instance?

Helpful Expert Reply:

The Roadmaster High-Low Hitch Adapter # RM-048-4 that you referenced is not suitable for use with a trailer; it is intended for use with tow bars only.

However, you may be able to level your hitched trailer by substituting a different shank for your weight distribution system. I have included a link to our main page for weight distribution shanks. Since I do not know the brand or type of system you are using you can use the filters in the left margin to narrow the results based on the type of spring bars you have (round or trunnion).

For example, Reese part # RP3344 is a shank for 2-inch hitches that provides approximately 8-inches of drop.
