Timbren or Weight Distribution System Recommendation for Towing a Trailer

Question:

I have a 2014 ford explore 4x4 cult with a factory class III hitch. I just purchased a 24ft camper weighing 3700lbs the explorer is rated for 5000lbs my hitch company recommended a timbren system and is telling me I dont need a weight distribution hitch with it. Is that correct information?

Yikes, that's actually the total opposite recommendation that I would give you. According to Timbren and Reese weight distribution is for towing and suspension enhancement is for carrying heavy cargo in the bed of the vehicle.

Since you plan on towing you will want a weight distribution system. A Timbren would basically act as a fulcrum point for the tongue weight of your trailer and would lighten the front axle of your 2014 Ford Explorer which would be dangerous for braking and turning.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow, this figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached an FAQ on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well.

Typically tongue weight is 10-15 percent of the total trailer weight which for you would be about 460 lbs. For that I would recommend the Reese Weight Distribution System part # RP66540.

I attached an FAQ article on weight distribution systems for you to check out also.
