Parts Recommendation to Tow a 7,500 lb Trailer with a 2000 Chevy C1500 Truck

Question:

My 2000 C1500 Chevy does not have factory tow package. Would like to add receiver, 7 pole, and brake controller. What do I need? Also what other additions should I have to tow up to 7500 pound 16foot covered trailer such as trans cooler, oil cooler?

First let's start with a hitch, if you do not have a 10 inch deep drop bumper you would want the Curt Hitch part # C15325. If you do have a drop bumper you would want the Curt Hitch part # C15317.

Now for wiring you will need to start with a 4-way like the Tow Ready Wiring Kit part # 118315. To convert this to a 7-way and install a brake controller you will need the Brake Controller Installation and 7-Way Install kit part # ETBC7. I attached an install video and installation instructions for this kit for you to check out.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup.

Any time you are towing a trailer that weighs more than 50 percent of the weight of the tow vehicle a weight distribution system is recommended.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow, this figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached an FAQ on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well.

Typically tongue weight is 10-15 percent of the total trailer weight. So for your trailer that weighs 7500 lbs you would need a system with about a 1,200 lb tongue weight rating like the Reese Weight Distribution System part # RP66542. For a 2-5/16 inch ball you would want the part # 19286.

A transmission cooler would be a great idea as well. The best way to pick out one is to measure the available distance you have in front of the radiator and pick the biggest one that will fit. The most popular cooler we offer with other owners of your vehicle has been the Derale Transmission Cooler part # D13503. You also would want the Derale Fittings part # D13035 to make the installation a little easier. I attached an FAQ article on transmission coolers for you to check out also.

You will want to consult the owners manual of your vehicle to be sure your vehicle has the capacity to tow this trailer.
