Correct Replacement Hub for a Trailer with Dexter L44649 Bearings

Question:

I have a 1990 Jayco 860sd tent trailer. My bearings are shot and I was looking to replace the entire hub and bearings together. The bearings I pulled out are L44649 and the hub is Dexter 8-91a. However the bearings you have listed with the Dexter 8-91a are the L 44643. I have no way of knowing if the incorrect bearings were put in previously. Is it safe to buy the Dexter 8-91-05UC1 that come with the L44649 bearings or keep the Dexter 8-91a and use the L44643 bearings?

In order to determine which is the correct hub for your trailer you will need to take some measurements of the spindle using dial or digital calipers for the most accurate measurement. I have included a picture that shows what measurements are needed.

The difference between bearing L44649 and L44643 is only 0.063 inches but for bearings, it is critical to get the correct size. This is also why you cannot measure using a ruler or tape measure. It has to be dial or digital calipers.
