We have several hitches that are confirmed fits for your 2001 Dodge Dakota. I spoke to my contact at Curt and he said whether the hitches will fit with your after market dual exhaust depends whether the pipes come straight out behind the truck or whether they are are angled. If they are angled you should not have a problem. Also the hitches will not fit if you have the factory or aftermarket fascia, or roll pan or tube bumper. I have included a helpful link to those hitches.
A popular hitch with our customers is the Curt hitch part # C13280. This hitch is a custom fit designed specifically for your Dodge Dakota.
I have included a link to a video of the trailer hitch installation on a 1999 Dodge Dakota for you to check out.
If you plan on doing some towing, you will want to pick up a wiring harness. The wiring harness I recommend for your truck is the Tow Ready T-One Harness, # 118329. This harness will simply plug into your tail light assemblies and does not require any cutting or splicing.
The final items you will need to complete your towing set up are a ball mount, hitch ball and pin and clip. For this, I recommend looking at our Ball Mount Kit, # 989900. This kit includes 2 different size hitch balls and ball mounts if you find yourself towing multiple trailers or needing different rises or drops to tow your trailer level. It also includes a storage bag to keep your items out of the elements when you are not towing.
