Wiring 2005 RAV4 for Towing Jayco Camper with 6-Way Square Trailer Connector

Question:

Hi, I am getting my SUV wired to work with our Jayco camper. The camper has 6 way sq., mounted in the tongue, Id guess one wire is to charge the camper battery while towing. I bought your 4 to 6 adapter but noticed 2 spaces are empty on the 6. Is there some adapter that has all 6, 5 sockets really, functioning?

The 4 pole on your vehicle isn't capable of carrying an additional circuit to maintain your camper battery. Since the 6 pin square plug on your camper is pretty much obsolete, I'd recommend you remove it and replace it with a 7-way connector like # PK12706 and install a 7-way on the vehicle. A 7-way is much more common, which is why I'd recommend it. Keep in mind that the accessory circuit on the 7-way can maintain a trailer mounted battery, but will not be able to recharge it once it's depleted.

How you proceed will depend on how the camper is equipped. If it has electric brakes, and you'd like them to actuate you'll need to install a brake controller on your 2005 Rav4. I'd recommend the Tekonsha Primus, part # TK90160. You'd then need a brake controller install kit like the # ETBC7, which includes all the hardware, wire and circuit breakers needed to install a controller. A functioning 4-pole, part # 118389 would be needed, and the adapter included with the kit would plug into the 4-pole and convert it to a 7-way.

If the trailer does not have brakes, you'd just install the 4 pole using the 118389 and use a # 37185 adapter. The adapter would plug into the 4-pole, and the white wire would ground to the vehicle frame. The rest of the loose wires would be neatly bundled up out of the way.

I've linked you to our trailer wiring help article, that shows how the trailer plug would be wired, as well as to install instructions and an install video.
