Installation is pretty simple. The 4 pole plug on the adapter plugs into the existing 4-pole on the vehicle, leaving four remaining wires. The white wire with the ring terminal would ground to the vehicle frame. The blue wire carries the output voltage from the brake controller to the trailer brakes. You'd need to add a length of 10 gauge wire, and run it under the vehicle to the engine compartment, through the firewall to connect to the blue wire exiting the rear of the brake controller. The black wire would be extended with a length of 10 gauge wire and ran to the positive battery terminal via a 40 amp circuit breaker, part # 9510. The purple wire would usually be used for reverse lights on the trailer. If needed, the wire would be tapped into the reverse light circuit.
I've linked you to a photo showing the information mentioned above, and to a video showing the adapter being installed on a similar vehicle (actually, it shows the whole brake controller install). The procedure on your Colorado would be almost identical.
