Correct Weight Distribution and Sway Control to Tow Jayco Travel Trailer

Question:

I am looking for the proper hitch to tow 2015 Jayco Jay Flight 26BH. Tongue weight of 440lbs. I will be towing with a 2008 Ford F150 with 4.6L v8. Your recommendations for hitch with separate sway control and one with built in sway control would be appreciated.

In choosing a weight distribution system you will need a system that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses the trailer tongue weight loaded and ready to tow, plus the weight of any gear in your Ford F150 behind the rear axle. I am including links to helpful articles on weight distribution and determining trailer tongue weight.

For a strait-line system with a tongue weight of 440 lbs, I would recommend the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System with Sway Control, part # RP66082. This system will include the Dual-Cam sway control. This system has a tongue weight of 200 lbs - 600 lbs and a gross towing weight of 10,000 lbs. This sway control is a proactive system that will stop trailer sway before it has a chance to start. I am including a link to the installation instructions on the # RP66082 system.

For a system with a separate sway control, I recommend Reese Weight Distribution System, part # RP66540. This system has a tongue weight range of 200 - 600 lbs and a gross towing capacity of 10,000 lbs. I am including a link to the installation instructions on the # RP66540 system. For a separate sway control I recommend the Reese Friction Sway Control Kit # 83660. Although # 83660 is inexpensive, it would be much less effective in dealing with sway than a Strait-Line system would be.

I have included an installation video of the Reese Friction Sway Control for you to check out.

Both weight distribution systems include everything you need, except for the hitch ball. If the coupler on your trailer accepts a 2 inch hitch ball (most common), I would recommend the Curt 2 Inch Hitch Ball part # A-90. For a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball I recommend part # C40030.

I am including a link to a video that will help answer some questions you might have on weight distribution systems.
