Do I Need a Relay when Installing the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller on a 2012 Volkswagen Touareg
Question:
I have a 2012 VW Touareg Sport with a factory installed trailer hitch and wiring. I need to have a trailer dealer install a P3 controller. I was wondering if you have detailed instructions I can bring them? I have the one you did for the 05-08 Touareg model years but want to see if you have one that covers 2012 specifically.

I spoke with my contact at Tekonsha and the installation instructions for the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller, # 90195, on a 2012 Volkswagen Touareg are the same instructions as those for the 2005 to 2008 models.
In order to activate the lamp out bulb on your vehicle's dash, a test pulse runs through the brake light output wire. This test pulse will cause erratic displays on the brake controller unless a 12 volt, normally open, relay is installed. These relays can be found at most local auto parts stores and will need to be installed on the red brake wire between the brake controller and the brake lamp signal on the factory brake controller connector on the vehicle.
I have attached a technical bulletin which may be of help.
