Complete Towing Package For 2016 GMC Acadia Including 7-Way For Brake Controller
Question:
My family will be purchasing a Coleman lantern 17B, we will be towing with a 2016 GMC Acadia. I’m trying to assemble my own tow package. I already have a Drawtite receiver rated at 5000lbs. I was needing a brake controller, 7 way trailer plug, an anti sway hitch and needed helper springs for the suspension. We are only towing locally to the beach and such. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there Daniel; thanks for writing in and we can get your 2016 GMC Acadia set up with the complete towing package, including the 7-way, helper springs, and weight distribution hitch. I'll go ahead and list out the parts you need, as you're already on the right track with the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75528.
- T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness - 7-Way Trailer Connector # 118271
- 7-Way Mounting Bracket # PK12711U
- Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR
- Plug-and-Play Wiring Harness for Redarc Brake Controller # RED27FR
- Coil SumoSprings Custom Helper Springs # CSS-1094R
The 7-way is a fit for your '16 Acadia, and comes with the fuses and relays needed to activate the tow package (the directions for the 7-way have the exact locations those need to go), and the mounting bracket will attach directly to the tab on the Draw-Tite hitch for easy install.
The Liberty brake controller is great because it doesn't have a bulky unit inside your Acadia's cab, it's just a knob which means it won't be taking up a bunch of space and you aren't going to be bumping your knee on it. Then for the springs, these are the correct ones for your Acadia to help keep you level as you tow.
Finally, for the weight distribution hitch I really like the Fastway, which will keep you level but also offers sway control, which is created by friction at two points on the brackets. The Fastway is also easily the best value among weight distribution hitches, with a unique combination of relative cost-effectiveness and quality. The total tongue weight of your trailer will be in the 500 lb range so the correct hitch is the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-0600.
For a hitch ball with this system use # A-90 for a 2" ball or # A-6 for a 2-5/16" ball. To install the hitch ball use socket # ALL643216.
