Can a Hitch Extender be Used with Swagman XTC4 Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack on a 2008 Ford Edge

Question:

Like you said in your review when the rack is folded up it hits my bumper. I am thinking of installing a 7inch hitch extension. Any issue using this?

I do not recommend using an extension with Swagman XTC4 bike rack # S64665. The issue is that the use of an extension, such as # HE06, reduces the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent.

The Class III, 2 inch trailer hitches for your 2008 Ford Edge have a tongue weight capacity of 350 pounds up to 400 pounds (for the Curt hitch). Using the adapter will reduce the capacities to 175 pounds or 200 pounds for the Curt hitch. The rack itself weighs 60 pounds. This means you would be left with 115 to 150 pounds of tongue weight capacity for the bikes.

It would also mean that there would be a lot more stress and torque on the trailer hitch due to the increased distance from the receiver to the end of the rack. If the bikes and rack do not exceed the reduced capacity of the trailer hitch then it will work but you need to be aware that the capacity is reduced and there is more stress on the hitch and vehicle when using an adapter.

Ideally, you would use the adapter only when the rack is folded and not when carrying bikes. If you do use the extension using a stabilization strap, # 18050, will help reduce some of the stress on the hitch.
