There are a few things that could cause the NC (not connected) message on the P2 brake controller # 90885, even if the trailer is connected. The likely culprit is a dirty or corroded trailer connector on either the vehicle or trailer or both. You will want to make sure both sides are clean and free of corrosion.
Another possibility is a problem with the trailer brake magnets. You will want to make sure that the magnet power wires are not loose or frayed. Also make sure that the magnet grounds are attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces near the magnets.
Visually inspect the magnets and if you can see the copper windings coming through they will need to be replaced. To further test the magnets you can follow the help article I have linked on testing magnets.
I have also included a couple of helpful articles on troubleshooting brake controllers for you.
