Adding Brakes To A 5 x 8 Utility Trailer With 5 Lug Hubs

Question:

Good morning, I have a 5x8 Carson utility trailer 5 lug no brakes. I’m looking to change that to 6x5.5 bolt pattern and add brakes with a 17” rim. What parts would be needed if possible. Thank you for your time.

It may be possible to change our your 5 lug hubs for a 6 lug and add brakes. It ultimately comes down to the size of your axle/spindles and what hubs will fit on the spindle. We would need to confirm the axle capacity, and inner and outer bearing numbers in order to recommend hubs. You would also need to add on a brake flange like the # 4-35, if flanges are not present on the axle. Adding brake flanges is best done by a professional.

For example, if you have a 3,500 lb axle, this uses a standard L68149 (1.378" inner diameter) inner bearing and a L44649 (1.063" inner diameter) outer bearing. We do carry 6 on 5-1/2" hubs that will fit that axle, like the # AKHD-655-35-K for a hub/drum. These will go with the electric brake assemblies # AKEBRK-35-SA.

You would also need to wire the trailer with a 7 way plug # HM20048, and install an electric brake controller like the # RED52VR in your tow vehicle.
