Can 13" Wheels and Tires Be Installed On Harbor Freight 1720LB Super Duty Folding Trailer?

Question:

Tire upgrade on Harbor Freight HAUL-MASTER1720 lb. Capacity 48 in. x 96 in. Super Duty Folding Trailer I have this trailer, and according to the instructions it comes with “two 5.3 in. x 12 in./ 5.30-12inch TIRE / WHEEL ASSEMBLY E”, that are limited to 45MPH. I want to add a set of 13 inch wheels/tires, to this trailer so I can safely cruise at 70-75MPH, so I am looking at a tire/wheel set with a code of “L 75 or M 81”. I don’t know what fits this trailer and what good options are. I would prefer something a bit more rugged if possible and wanted to know what tires would fit and what is a good option?

You will need to measure your current trailer wheel clearance to determine if you are able to move to the larger Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 13" White Modular Wheel # AM31957. This tire is 24.1" in diameter and 7" wide compared to your 5.3-12 # AM10066 which is 21.9" in diameter and 5.6" wide. You will need to ensure you have at least 1-3/4" of sidewall clearance from your trailer frame and suspension parts as well as the fender. With the tire being 2.2" larger in diameter you will need to ensure you have 4-1/8" of vertical clearance for the larger tire. 1-1/8" for the larger diameter and 3" for the suspension travel.

If you have fender clearance issues you may be able to modify the mounting brackets to move the fender up on the trailer.
