Brake Controller Wiring Adapter and Port Location for a Tekonsha Brake Controller in 1997 Ford F-250

Question:

My new to me 1997 F250HD has a Tekonsha Commander controller installed. Is there a Tekonsha proportional controller that I can easily replace it with? Ideally, by unplugging the connection at the back commander and plugging it into its replacement. No such luck, Im sure.

Congrats on your new truck! The Tekonsha Commander used a different plug than the current Tekonsha proportional brake controllers but if your truck has a factory 7-way connector you will have a brake controller port you can plug into. Hopefully this is what the prior owner plugged the Commander into.

You will need the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter item # 3035-P. This installs to the underside of the steering wheel, which you will need to remove the trim panel below the steering column to access. I have attached a picture below that will show you where to find the port and what steps to follow. Hopefully its easy to find because the Commander's plugged into it.

With this plug in adapter you can install any Tekonsha Proportional Brake Controller like the item # TK63VR you were looking at. Or the P2 item # 90885 or P3 item # 90195.
