Square Bar Roof Rack Recommendation for 2018 Mercedes E400 Wagon

Question:

I have old style Thule roof rack bars that are galvanized steel with a PVC coating. I have had these for 20 years probably and I have used them for 5 different cars I have had. They do not have a slot in the bottom sides, they were always captured by a strap over the top of the bar. I just bought a 2018 Mercedes E400/ 4Matic wagon with roof rails but it looks like the mounts require a slot milled in the bottom of the cross bar. Do I need to buy new bars or can I just mill slots into the bottom of my existing bars? I have a Bridgeport mill that could make quick work of it. Is the steel tubing the same dimensions as the old bars? If I can do this, what are the part numbers of the feet and accessories I would need to mount these bars on this MBZ wagon? Thanks. You guys have always been great to deal with.

I can't recommend you modify your bars but I have a similar solution for a new rack that is going to cost less than replacing feet for your 2018 Mercedes E400. For that you would want the Malone square bar rack part number # MPG202. This will give you a square bar rack that actually has the same dimensions as your Thule bars that fits your roof rails.
