Yes, you are able to use a Synthetic Rope # BDW20095 rather than the Steel Cable # DL24104 on the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL10954. The image below shows how the line needs to be routed on the drum of the winch.

No you can not use the long ends to mount the platform. The platform #RR82TB can only be mounted to the legs using the underside crossbars. There is no other spot on the platform that can accept legs.
