Troubleshooting Lippert Electric Tread Lite Steps That Only Work When Engine is Running
Question:
I have Lippert Electric Tread Lite Steps- just ordered a new set and had them installed the only way they extend and retracted is if the engine is runningand I open the door and shut off engine the steps stay out the only way they retract is Turing the engine back on. these steps use to extend and retract whenever the door was open and closed without the engine on the rv having to be on. I have checked all wiring nothing seems to be wrong- I have a step switch that used to cut the power to the steps so that every time you opened and closed the door the steps would remain out- that switch no longer operates anything either...what can I do to fix this issue

This is a really interesting problem but something is going on with the wiring and the step switch you mentioned not working seems like it could be a clue.
What I would do is use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test all of the wires that lead to the step with the engine running and with the engine off till you find the circuit that is getting voltage only when the vehicle is running. Once you find that you'll need to closely examine that circuit to determine why that's the case and fix as needed.
