4 Bike Rack Recommendation for Carrying Carbon Frame Bikes at Rear of Flat Towed Vehicle

Question:

I am looking for a bike rack that will carry 4 carbon frame mountain bikes on a flat towed vehicle Jeep Wrangler towed by a Class C motorhome and am looking to understand why some racks are rated for Motorhomes but NOT for Flat Towed Vehicles? I have a friend that has used the Thule T2 Pro XTR 4 bike option with a similar flat tow setup for the past 2 years as they have traveled around the country and have had no issues.....however, I am hesitant to buy the same rack if it isnt rated for a flat tow vehicle? Is there another 4 bike rack that would handle carbon frame bikes i.e. not holding it down by the frame but instead the bike wheels behind a flat towed vehicle you would recommend?

This is a really good question but the reason some racks aren't rated for flat towed vehicles is because of how the towed vehicles track behind the tow vehicle. The towed vehicles tend to make slight right and left turns as they travel down the highway like the vehicle is "wiggling" since the front wheels tend to over correct in both directions when travelling forward. This back and forth movement at the rear of the vehicle puts a little more stress on the bike racks so the rack needs to be rated specially for this.

So for a bike rack that would work great I would recommend the Kuat NV2.0 4-bike Base part # BA22B-BA02B which is pretty similar to the T2 you referenced. This only touches the bikes at the tires so it would work great with your carbon frame bikes and is rated for flat towed vehicles as well.

We also have a version of this rack that has a repair stand with the part # NV22G-NA22G.
