Flat Towing a 1997 Ford Ranger

Question:

Hi I am doing a drive away service towing my vehicle behind a semi. The trailer rental place is pretty positive and says they install tow bars on front steel bumpers all the time. I am a little skeptical everyone is giving me mixed reviews. I was just wondering what you do you need so you can install this type of tow bar? Can it be directly mounted a to a steel bumper? Thanks.

The only way Roadmaster recommends flat towing your 1997 Ranger with a tow bar is to install a base plate like # 435-3 to the frame of your 1997 Ford Ranger. They do not recommend bolting anything directly to the vehicle bumper.

Before attempting to flat tow the vehicle, check with Ford or your owners manual for the proper flat towing procedure. Some vehicles will need modification such as driveline disconnects, lube pumps or free wheeling hubs in order to be safely flat towed.

In addition to the base plates and tow bar, you will also need safety cables, a lighting solution and in most states, a supplemental braking system. I have linked you to several of our articles about flat towing.
