Should I Use a Weight Distribution Hitch For Towing a Small Travel Trailer With 2014 Jeep Wrangler?

Question:

I have a 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and want to start towing a small travel trailer. The Jeep has a factory tow package and I just added a brake controller. Factory weight of the trailer is just under 3,000 pounds. Im planning to add a weight distribution hitch with sway bar - is this a good idea? Also, tongue weight of the empty trailer is 310 pounds. Can I increase the tongue capacity of the Jeep with air lifts? I think its presently 350 pounds.

I highly recommend using a weight distribution hitch like the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET. This particular hitch is rated for trailers with a tongue weight of 200-600lbs and a total weight up to 6,000lbs. It will help to transfer the weight more evenly across your 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited to reduce sag and reduce sway caused by winds at highway speeds. This will make your towing experience safer and more enjoyable as you will not have the white knuckle feeling.

There is no suspension enhancement that will allow for additional tongue weight. I do recommend contacting your local Jeep dealer to verify your exact towing capacity as the owners manual is very vague and if you do not know your axle ratio the dealer will help you with that information. The owners manual also makes reference to a different weight limit when using weight distribution but they do not give any exact figures in the manual with the other towing numbers. This makes it unclear if the numbers listed is the maximum or if they could be higher with a weight distribution hitch.
