Weight Distribution System Recommendation for a 28' Trailer Towed By a 2022 GMC Yukon

Question:

I appreciate all of your informative YouTube videos and find them to be interesting, accurate, and well done! I have a 2022 GMC Yukon Denali Duramax diesel 4x4 without the max towing package or adjustable suspension and Im trying to find air bags for the rear springs to help with tongue weight for towing a 28’ travel trailer. Air Ride and Firestone do not make an air bag systems for the independent rear suspension and want to tow safely and don’t know if a set of weight distribution tow bars will be enough to compensate after loading the SUV with gear and hitching the trailer. I do not intend to exceed the 1500 lb. cargo capacity or 7700 lb. towing capacity and will keep the setup within the tow limits designed by GMC. I am in the market for a new travel trailer and hitch and would like to add a system to the vehicle, hitch, and/or trailer to keep us safe and the vehicle level while towing. The trailer we are considering is approximately 28’ long, weighs 5600 empty, and has a tongue weight of 580 pounds according to the manufacturers website. I am also considering the Pro Pride/Hensley Arrow sway control style hitch and noticed they have load leveling as an option. I would like to know what are all of my options to help with the tongue weight and to keep the tow vehicle level and the suspension, steering, and brakes performing as designed while towing? Thank you

Thank you for the kind words and for reaching out!

You are correct that neither Air Lift or Firestone (Ride-Rite) make an air bag kit for your 2022 GMC Yukon at this time (December 2022) but that's actually okay because a weight distribution hitch (WDH) system will do a better job at leveling the load and giving you more control. Air bags will level the system but the weight will still be pressing down at the tongue while a WDH actually distributes the loaded tongue weight of the trailer evenly among all of the axles in the towing setup which is why this gives you more control.

The ProPride 3P is the Cadillac of WDH systems so it will do an excellent job at giving you the best tow ride quality. To choose the best one for your setup you need to add the tongue weight of your fully loaded trailer along with the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your Yukon.

If your trailer GVWR is 7,700 lbs and you shoot for a 13% tongue weight (for best performance) that gives you a loaded tongue weight 1,001 lbs. This means the 14K rated ProPride 3P Weight Distribution Hitch w/ Sway Control for 2" Receivers # PR97QR with a tongue weight range of 850 lbs - 1,400 lbs is a good fit for you as long as you aren't loading over 300 lbs behind that rear axle.

I also recommend picking up the etrailer Tongue Weight Scale # e99044 to assist you with loading your trailer properly to get that 13% desired tongue weight.

Attached are some videos for you to check out!
