We offer two gooseneck hitches for the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado Classic HD 1500 Crew Cab; both can be seen on the link provided. One of these is the Curt Quick Goose # C630-652 that you referenced and the other is from B and W, their turnover ball hitch # BWGNRK1059. The Curt Quick Goose will fit your truck as long as it is not a flare-side or step-side bed.

Both hitches install without welding but both require drilling a ball hole in your truck bed. Installation instructions for both hitches are provided for your reference. Both hitches offer a 30,000-lb gross trailer weight rating but the B and W offers a higher 7500-lb tongue weight capacity compared to the Curt 6000-lb rating. A product review video for the B and W hitch is included for your reference.

I cannot speak to the cause for the damage to your friends truck when backing up using the Curt Quick Goose since I do not know the specifics about his truck. He may benefit from an offset ball such as # BWGNXA4685.

However, since gooseneck balls typically install directly over the rear axle I can give you a way to measure to estimate the trailer clearance when hitched to your truck. Place a tape measure at the center of the trailer coupler tube and measure forward to a front corner of the trailer. With this measurement locked in on the tape measure put the end of the tape measure at a center point directly above the rear axle in the truck bed (where the gooseneck ball will be once installed). From that point swing the tape measure from one side of the truck all the way over to the other side. If it clears the back of the cab then the nose of your trailer should also.
