Can Yakima LongArm Truck Bed Extender Handle Carrying Drywall

Question:

Looking to haul 4.5’ x 10’ or 12’ sheets of drywall due to the 9 ft ceilings in my garage. Can this extender handle this type of load and if not which one can? I see many extenders with a 48” width but the 56” wide by 10’ or 12’ long drywall is what I will be buying. How many sheets can it handle and do I need some sort of load stop? Thanks.

Expert Reply:

One sheet of 4-1/2 foot x 10 foot drywall that is 1/2 inch thick weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 lbs (give or take), and the Yakima extender has a 300 lb capacity so it can absolutely handle at least a few sheets at a time. So you can definitely use the LongArm, which is the following part number:

- Yakima LongArm Truck Bed Load Extender # Y01149

The LongArm # Y01149 does not have load stops, but does have integrated tie down points at the edge of the crossbars. The only other thing I recommend considering is a lock for the LongArm; it does come with an anti-rattle hitch pin but for added security you can use the Yakima HitchLock # Y07235.
