How to Convert a Trailer w/ Surge Brakes to Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes

Question:

Im renovating a 1977 Airstream 31 sovereign International Land Yacht. It came from the factory with surge brakes for emergency use. If I add an electric brake controller would the brakes work? The weight of the trailer is 5,070 pounds and is a dual axle. Can you recommend a controller for this trailer. Its being towed with a 2019 Nissan Armada with a factory tow package. Thanks

You can convert surge brakes to an electric over hydraulic braking system but you can not just add a brake controller to make them work as they are now. To do this, you will need an electric over hydraulic actuator and a brake controller.

For an electric over hydraulic actuator, I recommend one of the Carlisle HydraStar units. For drum brakes, you will want item # HBA-10. If your trailer has disc brakes, then you will want item # HBA16.

I have linked an installation video below that will show you how to get these set up.

I have also attached a couple of help articles below that will walk you through this process.

For your brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller item # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller that activates your trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action. It automatically adjusts the trailer's braking based on deceleration of your Armada.

Since your Armada has the tow package you will want the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers item # 3050-P. This will allow you to plug in the Tekonsha P3 to your factory port and does not require cutting or splicing or wires.

You will also need to lockout or replace the surge brake actuator.
