How Many Suitcases Will Fit in the Rightline Sport 3 Roof Cargo Bag on a 2013 Honda Pilot
Question:
How many med. size suitcases will a Rightline Sport 3 18 cu.ft. hold? Will this style work with a 2013 Honda Pilot with side rails? And is it safe to put suitcases in the cargo bag?

The Rightline Sport 3 # RL100S30 that you referenced measures 48L x 40W x 19T inches which I have noted in the attached picture. The only way to accurately figure out how many suitcases it will hold would be to know the sizes of the suitcases. I can estimate it could hold maybe 4 suitcases if you consider airline carry on suitcases as medium, however my idea of a medium suitcase is about double that size in which case it should hold 2 or 3. This carrier will hold up to 18 cubic feet of cargo. In the other attached picture you can see that we have loaded 3 duffel bags and still have room.
As you can see in the last attached picture, the Sport 3 will fit on your 2013 Honda Pilot by attaching to the side rails. The carrier comes with 4 straps, all of which should be used and tightened as much as possible. I have attached a brief demonstration video showing this bag attached to side rails.
Although the cargo carrier will fit on your Pilot by attaching to the side rails, the best way to carry anything on the roof of a vehicle is with a full roof rack system. Since you already have the side rails, adding crossbars would be easy. An economical set of crossbars for your 2013 Honda Pilot is the Sport Rack Semi-Custom Roof Rack # SR1099 set. The nice feature of this system is that these crossbars come with the mounting feet. When carrying a cargo bag with crossbars, the crossbars surround the bag so it will not shift during traveling.
Loading any cargo on a bare roof always lends itself to scratches. To help prevent this, I recommend checking out the Rightline Non-Skid Roof Protection Pad # RL100650. This pad will help prevent scratching that can occur during transport. You will want to make sure your roof is free from any debris before installing.
Please check your owners manual for your roof weight capacity and abide by that number as your guideline. It is perfectly safe to load suitcases in a roof cargo bag, just be aware of your weight limit.
To make loading/unloading our cargo bag easier check out the Wheel Mount Tire Step # HE4040. This step simply slides on over your tire and folds up for storage.
