Brake controllers are not vehicle specific so you can install the P2, # 90885, in your 1997 Chevy C3500. You will need a few additional items to complete the installation.
If your truck does not already have a trailer connector you will start by adding a 4-Way, # 118315. Next, after installing the 4-Way or if the truck already has one you will need to install the 4 and 7-Way installation kit # ETBC7. This provides a 7-Way and maintains the 4-Way and includes the wiring and accessories needed to install the brake controller.
If the truck already has a 7-Way then you will need installation kit # 5506 for a trailer with 6 to 8 brakes. You will then follow parts of the FAQ and video I have linked (for ETBC7) that pertain to a truck that already has a 7-Way.
