What Could Happen if the Jack-It 2 Bike Rack # LC429756 is Overloaded?

Question:

We are considering new e-bikes. The one we are close to acquiring weighs 51 lbs including battery, so probably 43-44 lbs without the battery. I know the Jack-It states an 80 lb capacity. What risks would we see with an extra 10 lbs total weight?

Expert Reply:

You do not want to overload the Jack-It 2 Bike Rack for A-Frame Trailers # LC429756 above its 80lb total bike capacity. Overloading the rack will risk damage to the welds and you could end up losing both your new e-bikes as they could then fall off the trailer. Depending on the e-bikes you are looking at you should also see what other parts besides the battery can be easily removed such as the seat. This may allow you to get each bike down to the 40lbs per bike you need to stay under.
